I'm Better On The Interweb

An interesting NYT article about how people try, often creatively, to present themselves on the internet as perfected: "Those studying [impression management] online have found that when people misrepresent themselves, it is often because they are attempting to express an idealized or future version of themselves, someone who is thinner or has actually finished Dante's 'Inferno.'"

How do you stretch the truth in your online profiles?

  • To be honest, a little :( In that my articles apeared only in the school newspaper, and local publications. They are true but sound more impressive than they truly are.

  • Might I just say, I am as much a nice person in reality as I am online. You should all take the time out to meet me.

  • I don't think this is a major breakthrough in thinking about online social networking. Of course we're going to put our best face forward, and exaggerate a bit when it seems appropriate. We do that when interacting with people too, just not to the degree we might online because it's easier to get away with. My question is why? If we exaggerate our good points to make ourselves feel better, then why would someone do it to such a degree that they would be unrecognizable or found to be a complete phony? That can't be good for the self esteem.
