Laura Ling and Kaj Larsen are at the New Hampshire Primary with a team of CJs taking a look at the major challenges facing the next president of the US. Today: The worlds population consume A LOT of resources, and the population keeps growing. Are we running out of stuff?

Romney and Clinton were quite the targets at the debates tonight.

? This is a shout out to Kaj Larsen...! Firtst things first; I want to personally extend my appreciation for what your doing. And yes, were screwed, but why I ask, why? Now that's out of the way...I must ask...what 'bout the politics of oil? As you forum the questions of what our next leaders will face, why not illuminate why or how certain questions are not answered or even asked??? In other words, if economics is a reflection of human involvement within an environment of scarce resources then where is the reporting of why the old way of doing things takes such a loud voice in public policy? While you choose an indirectness approach to the oil industry's influences through out our U.S market society, wouldn't a more direct approach to reporting, void of rant, etc. be more effective? Thanx, tngldwbstr

You know, that made me think differently about primaries; about the way they allow candidates to interact with people of a state. Everyone tends to focus on the actual choosing of a candidate and less on the interaction that occurs before the choosing. Can't say I blame them; there's not really as much news in the interaction (compared to the voting), but stuff like this shows it can be done.
-
In 1983 Reagan explained to Boomers that they would have to PREpay for their Social Security retirement fund because the "Pay Go" system used up to that point would not be enough to support them. So prepay they did via an almost 25% tax increase on wages up to a certain ever-changing amount (now around $97,000/year). So WHO is getting screwed? Politicians on both sides of the political aisle also are trying to destroy Medicare from the inside, out. Trying to pit the Current generation against the Boomer generation is a ploy we can only hope the critical mass does not fall for, because it only diverts attention away from the real problem, which is politicians who have sold us all out.

Hey this is a cool piece. I really like the CJ's in the street, the viewpoints, and Kaj explaining gas prices in the snow. Nice Job!

laura ling for presiden!!
she's so smart! and hot! -
You may not get all you think you are entitled to but living in America is not such a bad deal in the ultimate schema of things. Try living in some Russian shit hole at the whim of a Putinesque power monger where the average citizen's only refuge is a bottle of vodka. That's getting screwed! But I liked the piece and it's always good to see how you can protect your own ass wherever you are. Thanks Kaj and Laura-keep me thinking.

The richest nation on Earth is doing a lousy job of protecting its people. At least Russia was poor so had an excuse. There is no excuse for the richest nation not to be doing the best job at most things, but sadly we are far from it. We used to be SO much better, and we should be again, but only if we turn this boat around before it hits the falls.
-
Hi Spoon- i understand your point about a rich nation not doing enough. But that rich nation didn't get rich by being fair or altruistic. It was a long ugly climb on the backs of slaves, native inhabitants and poor folk so I'm not so sure Government doing the best for some segments, mainly the poor and disenfranchised, is a top Govt. priority. That being said, perhaps because of certain values of the founding fathers and the Constitution, not to mention an abundance of resources in America, it's not a bad place to hang your hat.

But in the history of our country, when our government did look out for the "little guys" our nation flourished. America is fast becoming an unfriendly place to hang your hat because of current policies that only provide another leg up for those that have several already. Policies like those in place now have only led to financial depression or recession.
-
There is depression and there is recession and current govt.policies certainly need some hefty revamping. But we've been there before and in the cyclical nature of American politics there will be better and worst days for the " little Guys" even in the richest nation. Meanwhile, I"v been all over Asia, South America, Europe and even deep in the Amazon jungle and seen some nasty displays of intolerant govt. And I'm not so sure we have been that better off in the past, than presently, in our affluent society. Think I'll stick around awhile and give America the benefit of doubt at least as it applies to quality of life.
