But I do respect the right of other people to believe other than I do. The problem I have with setting aside time for prayer in school is that I believe it infringes on my right not to believe.

  • Here here! That is precisely how I feel about the issue. I live in an area where nearly everyone is strongly Christian, though I am not. Very often in our public school there are religious references, and though I respect and am glad to see their faith, it bothers me to no end to see religion where it has no place. It does create a sort of pressure, this implication that you should be Christian too, and though I come from a Christian family, I find it somewhat offensive that I should have to feel this personal pressure in a federal setting. it makes me want to quote the Constitutional amendment that discusses the separation of church and state! I believe that public schools need to be reminded of that separation, particularly in the rural south.

  • bravo bravo! - im with both of you on that 100%
    the most important objective of setting up public education is to make it as equally open to everybody in terms of race, economic class or in this case religion. whether you believe in whatever religion or none or whatever, suggesting and/or implying prayer in a classroom will detract from the education of some students.
