  • After watching Day 3 of Current's coverage of the New Hampshire Primaries, I am heartened to hear less about the weather and more about the issues closest to the hearts of the folks watching Current. Kaj and Laura's coverage of the atmosphere of the New Hampshire primaries has helped me to understand the climate there. But today when Kaj launched into his piece called "Election 101"-- this time I was given the opportunity for true insight into the reason candidates battle so intensely in such a small cluster of states. This part of the overall piece helped me understand my own dilemma -- the feeling that my vote though personally important may not be the tipping point for electing our next president. I also appreciated Current's taking this session seriously as far as the need to make the foundation clear. We hear often about how recent college graduates are in debt and so can't embrace the opportunities their parents did. Now I'd like to hear how folks expect new government to provide increased opportunity and how they themselves are seeking these new opportunities. Can't wait for Kaj and Laura's Day 4 show!

  • Much more here that just student loans.

Yeah - We are in an interesting situation. My wife went back the School for Nursing (A seemingly more employable profession that the one she was in). She spent 2 years trying to get into various State School (SUNY) Nursing programs, but the wait lists were so long (Its a hot profession). We ended up sending her to a private (More Competitive !!!) college (Nazereth) which is big bucks !

We are looking at about $70,000 of debt. The good news is I have a decent job (I'm an Engineer) and her nursing salary covers our daycare costs+Loans. What's scary though, is that if she was single (Like most of her friends in her program were), It would have been impossible for her to really live on her income ($40,000 a years) with daycare/loan costs. Think about this, so a woman works hard for 4 years to get a BA in Nursing, and she needs to get married to someone w/out loans to be able to own a modest home, have kids and work.

now - My 2 and 4 years old, I want them to get educated and shoot for the stars. We are not sure how we will pay for them to go the school, I think if we continue with the current trends, we will have 2 classes of education to go along with the 2 classes that will emerge in society (Wealthy/Poor) that are evolving if we stay on the Bush Agenda.

  • This is such a problem with not many solutions. I'm going to get my masters now after working 4 years out of college, thinking that would lessen the bills...it doesn't.

  • You'd think in a country where increasingly a degree is necessary to do just about anything, education would be getting cheaper. But no, it's not. Real shame. I have to face this problem the next 4 years of my life, atleast.
