Gibson self-tuning guitar

animatorgeek
This is a new guitar from Gibson that tunes itself with robotic tuning pegs. Holy crap, this is awesome. It even has presets for alternate tunings and will tell you have much to adjust the saddle to correct intonation.

    • I can tune a guitar too, and this thing costs enough that I wouldn't really consider it unless I was a professional musician making plenty of money off jmy music.

But one point that someone made in an article I read was that since this supports alternate tunings, you can keep using the same guitar when you switch songs to one with an alternate tuning. Normally you'd have to switch to a different guitar previously set up for the alternate tuning. This is a great feature, since it means you can stay with the guitar you love the most, rather than having to go to a second-choice instrument.

    • "One two... one... one two. Check... check".

I've got a friend who's a guitar tech (apparently I shouldn't call them roadies any more) and he's intrigued by this guitar for it's novelty but he doesn't see it as drastically changing things as most musicians are quite loyal to traditional instruments.

It's not a bad point. Apart from the arrival of electrics, the general shape and functionality of musical instruments does seem to stay the same.

    • richjm, I have perfect pitch and was one of those guitarists who can easily tune a guitar in less than 30 seconds. I find this system appealing because guitars can get out of tune as one plays, so if the device could also automatically tunes the strings rapidly while one is performing, it would be a great boon. I was also partial to D tuning and open G tuning, and this device caters to such. Now, if they can make this device for the Russian 7-string gypsy guitar and tune it to that particular guitar's specs (D,B,G,d,b,g,d - basically an open G tuning), I would be overjoyed. But... it seems this device is only for electric guitars, and I was an acoustic guitar player.

As for the faithful roadie, his or her duties are by no means limited to tuning guitars, and not all of them are given the job of doing so, therefore I doubt that this spells the end of the faithful roadie. :)

    • This is brilliant. For a moderate (utterly rubbish) guitarist like myself who can't tune quickly by pitch alone, this would be cool and I like the ease of getting the guitar into different types of tuning.

I wonder how appealing it is to established guitarists who can easily tune in less than 30 seconds though.

Could this be the end of the faithful roadie?
