Should we rely on the government for anything? These young Libertarians believe that the government that governs best, governs least. They've started the "Free State Project" to increase their freedoms - at least in the state of New Hampshire.

  • Thanks for adding this! I thought it was really interesting, but I'd love to see this in action. How are they running programs? Do they think they will have an impact on government in NH?

  • I think most libertarians should be careful for what you wish for, because you might just get it. Would be interesting to see a state go full libertarian for 50 years and see how it works out for them.

I have a hard time understanding most libertarian ideals on society. Without sounding like I'm for facist government run states, let me give a few details.

When they sit down with that burger they cook on the grill in his back yard he should thank the FDA for enforcing meat packing quality standards so he won't get sick.

He can also thank his local state building inspectors so when the one individual drops a log out of his wood burning stove, everyone else has a chance to escape with their lives. If it wasn't the law, MOST contractors wouldn't build correctly. Even with the law being in place they try to cut corners everywhere they can.

So at the end of the day, the meat packers might whine because the government increases the cost of production, and contractors the same because who cares if a couple people die in a house fire or a collapsed roof in the winter? Well I care, and I dont have enough personal clout to say a company should make something safer. But the government who represents me does.

Although the people in this video may be kind caring individuals who dont want to hurt anyone, the government is there to deal with those who dont have the same mindset. And whats good for an individual isnt always good for society, and we exist the way we do only because we band together as a society.

  • jland1983, Exactly right. The government is US. It's up to us to make it work right. Poor New Hampshire if these people get enough clout to screw up their state. It may sound innocent, but given time and power expect the worst.
  • WOW, I had no Idea something like this existed, other than what's left of "hippie communes" of the west. What a great Idea! ! ! ! !

  • The government, the schools, and the economy all runs people's lives, giving them no choice in life, this pod is good it express what people wish to know and what people is too afraid to act on or to really do something about the cruelty of the U.S. system. We are like brainwashed zombies doing things that the world would like us to do, and thus we have no freedom really just to die working for the world with no real happiness.

  • i just wanted 2 point out the fact that the only woman in the house was the interviewer & that there only appeared 2 be 1 woman in the clips of the local meeting they held @ some coffee shop...& there were no black, brown, or asian people @ all...

libertarianism [like many other social systems] is a good idea on the surface, but apparently its difficult 2 apply equitably in real life...i definitely understand their concerns about the stranglehold that the government has on everyday freedoms, but just because the institutions are racist, sexist, & classist its more than naive 2 think that eliminating these societal ills will be as easy as ending governmental programs.

If the government was there to deal with the people who don't have that mindset, then why o why are they infringing on OUR rights. They say it's for protection against them, but they are making us so restricted in what we do, we have no choice. THings get popped out so quick, we can't react. Also, *band together as a society*, that's what they are doing and its working. Without the optimism it WON'T work. Open up ya minds!!

  • I understand the desire to not be controlled by a government that is run by people who do not live by the same values that you do. However, the role of the state (especially in this country) has been shrinking and shrinking since the seventies and the result has been a serious lack of quality public health care and education, and an increasing neglect of the poor. The CJ in this pod only touched on this lightly but it must be acknowledged! It would be VERY difficult to get a community together that could provide all these things in a comprehensive way and therefore government should devote a significant portion of its resources to deliver basic public services to its people.

  • Look, I'm down with those crazy Libertarians to a point, and i say that with all due affection--crazy like Hunter Thompson. Just like them I believe that the government should always be viewed with skepticism and not blindly trusted to do good, and I damn sure don't want the government legislating what I do personally if it doesn't harm anyone else (and yes, I am mostly talking about weed, but also about morality legislation in general).

Where we part ways is in the idea that we can co-exist in a society without government. Watch the video for more on that.

As an addendum, I'd like to say that I now consider the Libertarian view to be the far left of the feasible political spectrum. George Bush and his cohorts in the GOP have branded the Republicans as the party of Big Government with the size of the budget, warrantless wiretapping, and total corruption of our Justice Department. That puts people like me back in the center, who want us to be free but understand the necessity and purpose of government.

So I'm while I'm glad to have this little experiment in NH, I'd like to see it replicated en masse by people simply taking back control of their local governments. We need to enact policies that demand all our politicians are constantly, openly, and directly confronted by their constituents. No more 'guessing' what the public sentiment is through polls that ask ridiculous questions by an out of touch media apparatus. We have the tools to repair our government, we only need the will.

    BTW, GOBAMA!

  • I'm from New Hampshire and have seen my state flooded with people from Mass expecting the same control over their lives as they had in Mass. My wife and I both believe that "Live Free or Die" has just become a slogan on our License plates. I love NH and expect my state goevernment to stay out of my life. I think this project is great but have yet to see any change in the state goverment except that the Dems have taken over and the taxes keep going up, thanks to our Governor Lynch (not just a name what he's done to us). I have been an Independent ever since I was 18, I live on a small farm in the mountains I love NH and it's way of life. I dont want to see this become a thing of the past. So come to NH soon we need that independent spirit again
    Excellent piece!!!

  • I'm all for reducing the amount of government in our lives. However to remove healthcare from the government would mean complete privivitization, and that would mean people who are dirt poor would get no healthcare. Private schools are very expensive, remove the goverment from them and then the poor who do want to educate their kids will not even have a chance.

So rich, or well off people would be the people living in freedom and the poor would basically lose any hope of advancement in our society. And if they get sick they will be left to die.

Basically I like the general idea of getting less governmental control on my life, however I do want a government that is under my and my fellow citizens control like it was meant to be. Personally I think the best thing would be is to get the states more power and lessen the central governments power. Like it was meant to be when our country was created.

  • FREEDOM "goverment and other people have a lot more say over my life, or over somebody elses life, then they should". If you had a similar situation happen (picture hinting towards use of substance or not) because of a mental break down from not fitting the mold that the goverment is creating for us all- Regardless, that would be attached to your name -in govermental records, and it doesn't matter if you agree with how they came about that prognoisis - why should that permanately be attached to your name - your life - on file 'somewhere' now - to be used to discriminate and label you as something that you don't agree that you are or that you aren't. I think these people here are getting at the same concept - Personal Liberty!

  • The only way for a society to truly be run by the local population can only be met by becoming more agricultural, i.e. growing your own food and providing you and your family for what you need.
  • Some of the comments here remind me of a line from one of Lewis Black's stand-up specials:

"People talk about the government as if it's this fucking building that's got arms and legs and is walking around doing shit on it's own. It's PEOPLE! It's US!"

Change the attitudes of individual people and you will change the institutions they create.

  • i cannot say that I agree with These young Libertarians at all they live in an emerging world and yet they cling to old belief structures leze fair economics that states less government is the best solution I think that a cop out because its all been tried before! these leze fair freaks are so lame that cant be original to include and share with all! my advise to them is to get a real notion and stop segregating the usa population we need a totally New ideas to win back the economy of this nation!

  • Libertarianism Its been the main theme for Neocons in Republican party for last 60 years ,but as you can see with in regaurds to the bush presidency for the last 8 years are as dismal as things can ever get ....total lies everywhere! as the for the new emergence is about being empowered and creative to help everyone as equals as in the young voters of the Democratic party ... they will shape the destiny of future politics

Libertarianism ..It's been tried before ? ...where ?

  • Bush is an extreme of the Neocon ethics He still believes in conservative government as in leze fair economics and every time there is a Republican president they spend all the money on war and forget about our own economy here is the states That is the biggest crime bush has done!

One facet of reality you need to realize is that Obama is not in the pockets of special interests He a total lose cannon you can look at this news story this means we get the write the story from scratch! are you ready for the truth or do you still want to fooled and lied to be the republican party that that's the choice we have in this election
