  • I think it is utterly ridiculous how much it costs for those services. I had to have a crown and a root canal done on one tooth. It cost me $2500 for the two things; and this was the best price I could find after considering several options. Why does it have to cost so much for one tooth? I figured out why, the biggest factor that causes these prices to be so high is that those dental offices are being charged lots and lots of money for insurance to cover the patients. This accounts for at least 30% of the cost, then there is the overhead for the use of office space as medical facility and the insurance associated with that. Then employee costs are also expensive when you factor in benefits, these things account for an additional 50% of the cost which brings us to 80% of the original $2500 that it cost. That leaves 20% or $500 for the doctor who may have financial partners that he has to split that with even further. I know these things because I have worked as a bookkeeper with doctors and insurance companies and my conclusion is that the medical industry is being screwed by the insurance companies and the cost is being inflated to the consumer so that something that should only cost $500 ends up costing $750 more just to pay for the insurance.

This is absurd and why the whole insurance thing is so crazy. Think about it, we are buying health insurance to pay for medical services that are inflated because of the insurance that they are paying to provide the services, the insurance companies are milking both sides of the equation. It's like getting f$#ked in two places at the same time.

Switching to a single payer system is the only solution to this nightmare. There is only one insurance company and it is regulated by the government to keep their profits at a certain level to maintain viability and sustainability for hundreds or even thousands of years to come. Essentially, investment in the "one" insurance company could offer a return that is directly tied to the prime rate the Federal Reserve sets for interest rates, so people who invest can have a guaranteed return that is better than treasury bills.
