The future of one of the UK's most famous landmarks is in the hands of a bunch of designers who are fighting for the chance to install their own works on Trafalgar Square's Fourth Plinth.
Six artists have now been announced as being in contention for what could be one of Britain's most popular attractions in coming years. The shortlisted artists are Jeremy Deller, Tracey Emin, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Yinka Shonibare and Bob and Roberta Smith.
The offerings are as varied as you'd expect from the nominees, with everything from 100ft. peace signs, burnt out cars from Iraq, to meerkats all being in the running.
Check the link for a more detailed description of all of the entries, I'm definitely down with
Anthony Gormley's idea - he wants members of the public to stand on the plinth for an hour
so he can hopefully occupy the plinth continuously for 12 months.
Would you make a stand for Trafalgar Square?

I'm liking Jeremy Deller's unknown civilian idea the best. No meerkats please. We can see those on Meerkat Manor.

I love the fact that London does this. It seems really forward thinking to hand over such a prestigious spot in such a historical area to innovative and exciting new art.
It'll be dismissed by some as headline-grabbing, sensationalism-for-the-sake-of-it art but there's going to be some really good things happening on that plinth. The sculpture of Alison Lapper by Mark Quinn was good enough, in my mind, to be a permanent fixture and there's some worthy sucessors in this new line up. I like Anthony Gormley's and Amish Kapoor's proposals a lot, and the way they've not limited themselves to using the plinth as a platform for their artworks to sit on top off. They're using the whole thing and re-thinking its purpose. -
