Nuclear Britain

Private energy companies in Britain have been given the go-ahead to invest in new nuclear reactors, which could make the UK one of the world's leading nuclear energy users. This has environmental campaigners in a fury over what they see is a "dangerous and foolhardy decision."

Ben Ayliffe, senior nuclear campaigner at Greenpeace, said "Nuclear is yesterday's technology," he said. "We can tackle climate change and energy problems by using renewables and energy efficiency."

I must say I agree with Ayliffe and the environmentalists. I don't understand how a government can ignore the massive amounts of lethal radioactive waste that comes from producing nuclear energy on account of such small benefit. I'm no nuclear scientist, or government official, or environmentalist. But I do live here, and I do have enough common sense to say that the costs greatly outweigh the benefits of restoring the nuclear energy industry here and that it shouldn't happen. What's wrong with wind power???

  • Here's an article about the government greenlighting the nuclear energy comeback. Woo hoo, Britain. Thanks.

  • Scares me; even if they are a friend of the US!

  • Britain has a very long way to go to match France's 60 or so nuclear plants...

  • This is very disappointing and not at all the direction we should be going in as a planet. We truly have lost our way.

  • Nuclear power is like cutting butter with a chainsaw. There's absolutely no reason to rely on nukes when there are so many proven alternatives.

Here's a little pod I did about nuclear power in the U.S.

  • So, does Dennis Miller like France or despise it? Flip-flop?

Ah, who cares, he's such an idiot, it's amazing he remembers to eat. However, Patrick Moore, co-founder of Greenpeace, should know better. I'm going with the organization he helped found on this one. No more nuclear power plants. We're going to have a big enough challenge decommissioning and cleaning up the 104 nuclear power plants already in operation.

    John Edwards for President 2008.

  • What's wrong with wind power? Very simple: you can't draw even a fraction of the energy required to fuel our energy-guzzling civilization with wind power. Nor can you do it with solar power, ethanol, or the power of positive thinking. Aside from burning oil, nuclear power is the only technology that currently exists that can keep a modern city running, and there are almost as many problems with nuclear power (though not quite as much) as there are with oil.

We should be focusing less on what we're using to get our energy (though this is still important) and more on how to cut back on the obscene amounts of energy we currently use. This means MAJOR CHANGES IN OUR CURRENT WAY OF LIFE but we really have no choice. We're going to run out of oil in this century and major changes are going to happen whether we like it or not. But if we make these changes ourselves before the crisis, it's going to be a lot less messy, and future generations won't hate us (as much).

  • You've got a point, Kemstone - even James Lovelock thinks that nuclear plants are the only but insufficient short-term solution (the world is running out of uranium), as he lays it out in his book "The Revenge of Gaia: Why the Earth is Fighting Back - and How we Can Still Save Humanity". His prognosis is not very optimistic, either.

  • earth is running out of uranium? uh oh. once the oil runs out i can see all the oil companies turning into the nuclear companies and then sucking up all the uranium on the planet. and once it runs out, if we still havent come up with an alternate energy (and we havent destroyed ourselves) then it will be high time to get our asses into space and find some fucking uranium! we'll start by tearing up the moon, if we need to blow holes in it, fine! if there's none there, then onto mars! i dont care if we have to blow it out of its orbit, we need what's in its guts! uranium uranium uranium! earth needs uranium! and we'll have a carte blanche to destroy whatever in the solar system is in our way, we will make it acceptable because we're desperate to find uranium! oh cant you just see the causes of a new space race now? heading into space to try and find more energy to waste. makes you proud to be an earthling.

  • Ok, tip from the future party 'The Very Angry Enviromentlists': Run all cars on YOUR POO, as good as petrol mine.
Invest in your own solar power, sun goes out too soon, what with the wheather and all, use any power of a sun lamp, non stop going if loads of extensions, affordably priced really, (BILLS BAD!)
Trust us, THEY REALLY WORK! PS: Rumours that we are ran by a Rooster Rhoady, YES we are, and why not? Raceist. WoodyWoodBeck, Rhoady has a policy, we WOM't BE friend with the US, even though are current goverment are a load of S****! So, basically NO. Not as long as Bush is taking lead.
