With less than a month before Super Tuesday, every vote counts. But will every vote actually be counted? One-by-one, states across the country are finding critical flaws in the accuracy and security of electronic voting machines. We speak with Clive Thompson, the author of a New York Times Magazine cover story titled ?Can You Count on Voting Machines??

  • Will my vote be counted in 2008? I'm gonna go with the safe answer: hell no! Forget the machines themselves (we already know those will be either outright rigged by Diebold or the crappy malfunctioning machines will be sent to Democratic districts) but least we forget the brilliant game of "Toss the ballots in the garbage." Remember how the Republicans used auto-dialers to call Dem voters and tell them their voting precinct had been changed when it actually hadn't? Will THAT con game still go on? What about the provisional ballot? Republicans were handing these out like candy without informing people they weren't "offical" and just ended up tossing them in the garbage. What about the new Photo ID laws? Will people have their votes tossed in the garbage because they don't have a Photo ID or because it won't be the "right kind" of Photo ID? Answer: toss it in the garbage! Hanging chad? Toss it in the garbage! And what about the caging lists? Are you voting while black? That's illegal (according to Republicans!) Toss it in the garbage. I say we need to find some way to do away with the "secret" ballot so we as citizens have some way to verify what happened to our votes after we cast them. Was my candidate properly recorded or did Diebold change it without my knowledge? Did my vote get tossed in the garbage or was it offically counted? If I can't verify my vote then basically the Republicans have a blank check to just toss it in the garbage or change it as they see fit. Is it time to do away with the whole "secret" ballot concept and bring transperancy back to the process?

  • When I was a very young boy, which was a long time ago, my mother and grandfather worked an election board in the small town I grew up in. When the polls closed, they counted the ballots by hand, double checked each other, and then my grandfather locked the ballots in a sack and took them to the county seat to be counted again if necessary. I watched all this from my place in the corner. I know that people have "lost" ballots, paid off voters, and voted the "graveyard" ever since we got the idea of elections, but those slips of paper with Xs on them seemed a lot more democratic that all the voting machines in the world no matter who writes the code.

  • a company that makes ATM machines makes our boting machines, but we see no flaws in the ATM machines...... one has to wonder why there are flaws in the voting machines....
