Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton on Friday proposed $70 billion in emergency spending to stave off a possible U.S. election-year recession, upstaging Republican rivals who clashed over the economy but offered few specifics. The New York senator, who hopes to become the Democratic nominee in the November election, proposed $30 billion to help low-income families hit by the mortgage crisis and $40 billion in other spending, mainly for the poor and unemployed. The plan immediately came under fire, with a spokesman for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney charging the plan increases spending, "ignores innovation and instead grows the size and role of government." -- let me just interject something here that is probably on everyone else's mind. What the hell does Romney mean by "innovation"? Is that his way of saying that as a leader facing an economic crisis his solution would be to....do nothing? That somehow the mythical, magical powers of the "free market" will solve a problem created by a lack of voersight and regulation in the mortgage industry? Let me see if I understand the plan: doing nothing allowed the crisis to happen and therefore doing nothing again will fix the problem. Oooookay! I'm not sure letting tens of millions of people lose their homes will INCREASE consumer spending and thus stimulate the economy. But maybe I'm wrong. Does Hillary's proposal make sense? Is the Republican do-nothing approach (as practiced before and during the Depression) the right move at this point? Is Hillary's proposal just a temporary fix to a deeper economic problem? Is it just pandering during an election cycle? You tell me.

Romney is a tool for the corporate machine. He'd rather spend the same amount of money on corporate giveaways to big oil and big pharma.

    Hillarys stimulus plan is "socialism".
Government should pay for Health, low-income families, education and anything else that needs fixed. The problem is who pays for this?
YOU DO!---BY RAISING YOUR TAXES AND REMOVING YOU FREEDOMS.
That isn't even a plan..more a political scam to gain power by targeting the ignorant.
    sniff sniffles :((
she can cry when it fails but you will have to live with it
    Have a Nice day!

actually, no. The health care & education benefits EVERYONE. Say you break your leg skiing. Can you pay for surgery out of your pocket? Or even just the ambulance portion of it? Which may be anywhere from $12000 and up? Didn't think so. Or say someone in your family got sick and need chemotherapy. Misfortune happens to everyone. Not just poor people. And secondly, the richest 1% of the nation and big multi-national corporations haven't been paying their fair share of the taxes for years. Leaving you and I to pay more as a result of their cheating on their taxes. How is that fair? Raising taxes and closing the loopholes on them aren't taking away freedoms. It's called economic fairness.

Stop listening to Rush Limbaugh. He's a drug-addicted corporate shrill. And start opening your eyes to reality. The conditions that affects poor people, also affects the rest of us.

don't ask a question and then answer it because you probably will be wrong. And again, who will pay for this $12,000 medical bill? Hillary says what she wants people to hear but never gives specifics because the truth is, you and I will pay for medical, schooling, homeless housing by raising your taxes. Look at your check and then tell me you can afford more off the top to taxes.
C;'mon get a clue --nothing is free in life and their will always be those who have more and those who will have less. Your socialist ideas don't work and its been proven by history over and over.
    Have a nice day :)

Spazzovision -- I'm gong to help you with Econ 101 and some basic math. Take a look at your taxes -- go on! Take a look and now do a little math and tell me how much you pay IN TAXES for our military (biggest/most expensive in the world), how much in taxes you pay for the police, the fire department, the coast guard, the highway, libraries, social security, and on and on. Did it come out to $300 a month? Because JUST THE PREMIUMS FOR HEALTHCARE COME TO AN AVERAGE OF $300 A MONTH (or more for the average America). And that does not cover you co-pays! And that does not cover your prescriptions. Need dental work? 99 percent of all plans only cover 50 PERCENT (maximum!) for any "major" work such as a $2000 root canal. Again, for all the Conservatives who think a slight increase in taxes is somehow "more" than what they are currently paying per year just in freaking premiums -- I urge you to sit down and do the math. Taxes are cheaper. By a lot. By a LOT. I also ask you this question: hospitals are required by law (and Christian morality) to treat anyone who needs emergency life saving measures -- which cost the most of any procedure. If a minimum wage worker get an ER bill for $500,000 but has zero dollars in the bank and pays NONE of that bill -- who pays for it? Second question -- did this minimum wage worker pay taxes for the military, the police, the library, social security, ect? Answer: yup. So under a single payer healthcare system that minimum wage worker pays something -- under our current plan he pays ZERO and the hospitals simply raises rates on YOU to compensate for the money they lost because this guy couldn't pay his bill. Which system is cheaper: a slight tax increase OR $300 a month, plus co-pays, plus prescriptions, plus all the procedures your insurance don't cover "in full" and you have to out-of-pocket? That's correct! taxes are cheaper. What is better in keeping hospital costs down: giving away millions of dollars in medical services to the working (keyword) poor who never pay a penny of their bill or simply switching to a tax-based system (like with the police and military) wherein EVERYONE pays (and the tax is progressive and based on income)? Right! Taxes help keep costs down because hospitals aren't losing millions of dollars (millions!) every year on patients who default on their bills. Again, I have to keep asking you how can a hospital keep costs low if their are required to give hundreds of thousands (millions) of dollars in treatment to people who NEVER pay a penny of their bill because they are too poor? Under a tax based system we are supporting the most expensive military in the world in addition to the cops, the firefighters, the libraries, the highways, the schools and on and on. Can you honestly not see that you are getting ripped off by insurance companies who require you to pay $300 (or more) a month and STILL KEEP SENDING YOU BILLS and co-pays and another bill for your prescriptions and on and on?

Do you really think military spending will go away.
For what Hillary and her cloney dems are suggesting will come out of your pocket.
So--let me ask you how much of your paycheck are you willing to give the gov't for all these programs.
I have heard response like 45% of a paycheck or $450 of every thousand a person makes. How much freedoms are you willing to lose. Lets face it...its all candy talk to suck people like yourself into voting to keep them in power...but their programs will never pass the scrutiny of the financial overhaul it would take to cover the costs.
    Reality Rules!!
    Hey--Have a nice day :)

    Spazzo,

You're the one who needs to wake up. If you honestly think that the Bush economy was so great for everyone, you've been living under a rock, or otherwise had your frontal lobes removed.

Every economic disaster we're seeing now can be traced to Bush's incompetence and his radical free market ideology - meaning the private corporations get to have 100% control on how they use our country's resources. Everything from the subprime mortage crisis to the soaring national deficit came from letting big corporations have their way while they pillaged and burned America and the world. In the case of subprime, it was the banks' abusive loan practices against low-incoming households while spinning fairy tales on wall street that did it. Our soaring national deficit? On defense spending, with 90% of it given away to private contractors such as Halliburton and Blackwater. They have nothing to do with the war in terms of real fighting, but they are great at sucking up all the resources that our soldiers needed for armor and health care, while leaving tax payers to foot the bill. All the while, Bush kept on giving away our tax dollars to them as corporate subsidies. While raising middle-class taxes year after year. Middle class = people who make $25 K - $100 K a year.

That's right. Raising our taxes. Not lowering. You would know that if you compared your tax returns for the last 7 years.

The Bush economy also has the worst job creation record compared to any president in the last 100 years. This is because companies were outsourcing American jobs overseas, leaving college graduates to pay the price. Many of my peers now work at Starbucks despite their college degree. For all the conservative talk about "freedoms", they are fastly making serfdoms out of all of us.

Just as no one would advocate total state control over the economy, one should also not advocate total corporate control without accountability. If you want to know what total corporate control without accountability is like, you can look at Saudi Arabia. What we're advocating is not socialism. It is common sense.

If it is socialism, then why do top economists endorse John Edwards' plan? Keep in mind, economists are people who study the free market. Hardly socialistic by any comparison.

Quit drinking kool-aid, Spazz, and wake the hell up. Your future is being stolen right underneath your feet, while the rightwing media have you trumpeting their causes to rip off America some more.

Unfortunately for them, great numbers of the American people are fed up with it. And their day of reckoning will come this November.

Oh!! I thought you were one of those Bush haters--lol :))
Just face it...get over it...you lost all the battles and even with pelosi, biden, kennedy running congress
I know it isn't cool to be a lib anymore especially since you libs couldn't achieve even the slightest victory over stupid, ignorant, dumb ass Bush--lol
Now stop going around bashing another american icon like Kool-Aid! Maybe you guys need a little more kool-aid in the cup your drinking.from--lol. Yes, you libs remind us everyday what america wants. We just want less taxation, less government, win the war, control the borders and the freedom to create. Yes, two great choices for the Dems, Wigged out Hillary, with a black southern drawl crying in front of the world or Bama who is ready to invade pakistan; nice choices.
    Have a nice day! :)--

Give it up, Spazz. News flash! When all you've got left are personal attacks rather than valid arguments, you've lost the argument. When you're resorting to defending Bush, you've lost the argument. When you're resorting to racist & sexist attacks, you've lost the argument.

Oh, and in case you haven't noticed, it's night time. Not day. Or are you too wasted on kool-aid to tell?

It doesn't matter how many personal attacks you throw at me or Democrats in general. You know you guys are losing the election and that is that.

    Gee--I didn't think I was attacking anyone.
All my statements were true and so many of yours were misrepresented, overexagerated or just false and we don't have all day to debate this issue so why throw out so much bull. You talk like a true lib .
    Remember Reality Rules!!

If you're dense enough to think the word "liberal" is an insult, then you are dumber than I thought! Yes, reality. Not the one you made up in your head. The one where Bush is president and he ran our country into the ground. That's reality.

Oh, and how is "you're throwing out so much bull" not a personal attack? Get real! You just want to say these kinds of things to people and expect them to believe you when you say it's not personal.

Quite frankly, you're a bully and a sad little man. I'm tired of talking to you because you have nothing to add but personal insults.

Have a shitty day, little man.
