Congress Returns With Gay Rights On The Agenda

Members of Congress began returning to Washington today with three LGBT rights bill still in play - the Matthew Shepard Hate Crime Act, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

Whether any of them advance will be up to the will of the Democratic leadership in the House and Senate. The Democratic-led House reconvenes Tuesday. The Senate returns Jan. 22.

  • Let's hope they pass some of them--even if they did undercut the ENDA by removing protections for gender expression and gender identity.

  • Well let's not try and think so negatively; last time he VETO'd the Matthew Shepard Bill because it was attached to the Pentagon bill that included War budgeting and he VETO'd that because he wanted more money. That was a HUGE mistake on the part of Congress and Senate.

    I hope that this year the LGBT community makes sure their voice is heard; it's ever so important now because of how close this election is and is going to be.

  • The Matthew Shepard Bill was removed from the pentagon spending bill before it reached Bush because he threatened to veto it. He vetoed the bill anyway because the Iraqi government threatened to remove billions from U.S. banks if provisions preventing civilian lawsuits against the Iraqi government for atrocities during Sadam Hussanes regime weren't included.

    For the record, I am not thinking negatively, I am thinking realistically. Bush will not support gay rights, ever. The democrats realize how important the gay vote is in 2008, so they have to make some effort to please us now if they want our vote then.

  • despite the fact that Bush should pass the bills, he will probably veto them all. until we get a more accepting president in office LGBT rights will most likely stay where they are.
