"The Iraqi defense minister said Monday that his nation would not be able to take full responsibility for its internal security until 2012, nor be able on its own to defend Iraq's borders from external threat until at least 2018."
I don't like it. Do you?

It's so damn frustrating, and that picture says it all. Obviously we should not have gone in there in the first place, but if we pull out now it's not as if gruesome scenes like the one in that picture are going to stop. I don't think anybody wants to say in Iraq for another 10 years (except Halliburton, Blackwater, and the other corporations that profit from all this human misery) but if we just pull out the violence will continue and it might even escalate.
I think the only good solution is one that hasn't been thought of yet. I won't pretend that I know enough to what to do about it, but I know that the United States can't fix this problem by itself and the only reasonable solution is going to involve OTHER countries. There has to be some sort of international pressure on the Sunnis and Shiites to prevent them from trying to cleanse their nation of each other.
But one thing is certain: just having our troops march around and shove guns in their faces until they learn to behave (if you'll pardon the gross oversimplification) is no solution at all. -
The people of the news media need to grow a pair and actually broadcast images like this. If people saw this side of war and not just hours of talking heads speculating, imagine how opinion polls would shift. Anybody with a younger sibling or children should imagine what it would be like to have to care for a child after they have suffered like this. imagine where the family's emotions will be directed after the sorrow turns to anger, you guessed it, the United States. We are creating more resentment with every life we ruin and every day we stay.

How long did our current president say we would be involved in Iraq when we first went there, one year, maybe less?

Imagine how soon the war would end if these kinds of images were shown on the news on tv...

iraq needs us to stay around until 2018? the only thing that tells me is that they must have figured out when all the oil will be gone. so set your clocks people, by 2018 we will either have spread all through the middle east and taken over every other country with oil, or we can start preparing for the downfall of human civilization. either way it should be fun to watch on the news.
