  • Where's Duke, punk?! :) I don't have a list...cause I haven't been following enough other teams close enough. But I (always) think the Blue Devils deserve a spot on a top teams list, especially if you're going as far as 8, and I don't think that's unrealistic this year!

  • I saw Pitt at the Garden and they beat Duke despite one of the worst first halves Pitt played all year... Pitt lost Fields (their 2nd best player and court general) and lost to Villanova solely for that reason.... Despite the loss of fields they beat Georgetown who is on your list.... I guess beating Duke and Georgetown doesn't get you in the top 10 when your only 2 losses are to ranked teams.... Duke is good this year though...

  • I haven't trusted Nostradamus since he picked Phi Slamma Jamma to take it all in '83... But I think Washington State should be on the list if only because of the AROC factor.... and let's face it, Xavier isn't gonna win a title!

  • Being a current UNC student, I am required to say in order to graduate:

UNC all the way, I hate Duke.

  • Pitt is an interesting one. Definitely a damn fine team with a good amount of experience. Honestly haven't watched them play enough this year to put them in my top 8. Last year in the tournament I thought they did okay but didn't win any "big" games and eventually lost to UCLA.
Xavier!? Isn't that just the dumbest thing you've seen lately. They WILL NOT win the championship this year. An easy time in the A10 might help them with a seed but I think they could get knocked off in the second or third round if they meet someone decent.
Casey - i like Texas too but think they have a lot to prove over the course of the year. Good conference games against Baylor (who could be a tough team), Texas A&M and of course Kansas. They might not even be the #2 team in that conference even though they beat UCLA. Still a damn fine team. props for putting up your list by the way.

God isn't it awesome to be thinking brackets at this point. WOW.

  • Oh and Duke! Don't get me started....

  • The two best teams right now are Kansas & Memphis. As much as I love my Bruins, I think they're a shade behind those teams right now.

I still maintain that UNC is quite overrated and is probably looking @ a 2nd round early exit (again).

Pitt is very impressive. Really, they've just continued what Howland built there. You have to like watching that team play.

Xavier?? I know it's only January, but ummm, they lost by 20 tonight to Temple. BTW - Temple improved to 7-8 with tonight's win. We will NOT be seeing Xavier in the late rounds.

  • Pitt hasn't been this good since the days of low post stalwart Charles Smith, rebounding machine Jerome Lane, and the incomparable Demetrius Gore!

  • Alex - I agree, Texas has a lot to prove, especially after watching Texas A&M and Tech last night. A&M and Tech are looking good.

But, whenever in doubt, I always choose coaches over potential, and I love Rick Barnes and Tom Izzo, so no matter their regular seasons games, if they have at least mediocre to good teams that year, I vote for Mich State and Texas into my elite 8.

With the same justification, I hardly ever vote for Roy Williams teams (unless the talent is undeniable). UNC is looking WEAK. Last night against Georgia Tech, they should've lost. They disappear defensively, and rely too heavily on a 6'7" forward named Tyler Hansborough (no way he's six-nine!).

Memphis is looking good, but not great. But I like Calipari, so they're in.

Washington State and UCLA are great, because they play each other - and the rest of the PAC 10. They might not have the best record, but will be strong. PAC 10 will have the most teams in the Sweet 16.

Kansas - keep in mind, I'm biased (this has been my team forever) - is looking stronger then I've ever seen. They're better than the '97 team with Jacque Vaughn, Paul Peirce, Raef Lafrentz and Scot Pollard. I'll be very disappointed if they don't get to the FF this year.

  • Oh yeah - I'm schadenfreude all over anything Duke. Don't quote me on this, but I think Coach K's style and talent choices are becoming old fashioned. His players aren't making the same impact in the NBA once they leave and his talent pool is slimming. I expect him to be around forever, but his glory years are over.*

    * keep in mind, this is all coming from tried and true KU-head.

  • Kids, hating on Duke is like hating on the Yankees - very cliche (though Sinclair - you're allowed. It's not cliche for you to rib us...just like I'm allowed to say what's next, as a Duke alum!).

And UNC? They just BARELY beat GA Tech...one point, down to the last play... GA Tech is unranked and there were at least a few missed calls... They're not as untouchable as everyone says.

  • I agree, it can feel cliche to hate on Duke. But only if it's a new thing. I've hated since Laettner. I remember his big shot like my parents remember where they were when they heard about JFK getting shot.

Oh, College Basketball. I love you.

  • Duke is not like the Yankees... Unlike the subjectivity involved in the college basketball rankings the Yankees ranking will always be determined by THEIR RESULTS.... Duke has been legitimately a top 25-35 team in the last 6 years, yet has remained in the top 15 throughout the time.... If Duke had played Virginia Commonwealth 10 times last year, VCU would have won 7 of the games... Duke just did not have the athleticism... Paulus is garbage, etc. .... This is the first year in a while where they have been a top 15 because they have athletic ability... The notion that Pitt is not a top 10 team is ridiculous.. At full health Pitt is a top 8 team PERIOD!!!!!! They have size, athleticism, 3 point shooting, etc.... The best team is clearly UNC... Memphis??? Play in a real conference...
