Muslim track star disqualified for her outfit

So much for religious freedom. This Washington DC high school track star has been disqualified from a meet for wearing her custom-made one-piece unitard that covers her head, arms, torso and legs under her team uniform, so as to conform to her Muslim faith. Officials at the meet say that this outfit violates competition rules: "Uniforms are required to be 'a single-solid color and unadorned, except for a single school name or insignia no more than 2 1/4 inches.'"

Something seems amiss. She was able to wear her outfit all year last year without a problem. But suddenly it's gotten her disqualified. Is this fair?

  • Land of the Free for Christians only that let their daughters walk around in skimpy shorts but discriminate against a young woman who wants to be modest and win !!!

  • UMMM, this is so incredibly ridiculous, I don't even know what to say. I just hope that publicity of this brings enough attention to her that recruiters will take notice of her running records. Also, I hope they realize her dedication to her beliefs might just also be a sign that she would be dedicated to her team, school, and country. Keep running Juashaunna!!

  • this is so unfair. if it doesn't effect her running why should it matter? they are being incredibly inconsiderate! by being disqualified, she probably won't be discovered by college recruiters. what is she going to do now?

  • This is so absurd I can't believe what I'm reading. I hope this article will bring attention to college recruiters and they will be able get in contact with her.

  • Let the girl run man! That's what she is there for.

  • How about an email address to this guy so we could write him directly?? - or a telephone number?

We could express what an arse he is.

Truth be known, it's probably not anything about her religion, he wanted her out of the way so another girl would be sure to win and get the desired attention from college recruiters.

The issue about the girls religious beliefs is just a rouse the "official" hoped would give him justification and sympathy for doing it.

The guy is a weazel!!!!!!!!!!!! Who is the girl that stands to gain if the Muslim girl doesn't run? What's the idiot "official" stand to gain??

I've watched this sort of thing happen in elementary schools - can you imagine? Makes one sick!

  • 2 1/4 inch insignia?! Apostasy! If only Allah would strike her down for the evil vile licentious sinner that she knows in her cold heart she is.
  • What!? Shes not objectifying herself in any way? This is deplorable. But jeezus! shes a MUSLIM! Should deport her for this greavous act of western non conformity.

Its a funny... apparently people have told me sarcasm doesn't translate well to writen word. =)

Seriously though, this is rediculous. I hope she fights the descision, or the school kids get off their asses and organise some resistance. But i know in the age of pimp my ride, female objectification, and global unawareness that plagues the majority of high schools this is only wishfull thinking.

If i wasnt a gender steryotype i would cry. hehe

  • This is a bit misleading. It looks like she's not disqualified because she is covering her body, rather, the outfit is not a single solid color as required. Seems simple to me, make sure you play by the rules and make the custom outfit a simple solid color. At least thats the information given and the conclusion that should be reached. Fascinating that so many are so quick to jump on this as anti-Muslim. As Rajahneesh used to say, whatever we believe of others is nothing more than a reflection of ourselves.

  • The fact is, she is in America and whatever the real reason for her disqualification, it appears it isn't a good one.

Clearly, the outfit wasn't an advantage over the normal uniform, and she didn't have any slogans, in fact, the red white and blue she wears appears to be the colors of the American flag (correct me if I'm wrong) - conclusion: the guy in question is a jack arse!

  • What is infuriating about this story is the fact that again we have to bend the rules for religion in school. It states in the Constitution seperation of CHURCH AND STATE!! She is going to a public school, meaning STATE funds! I am sorry, it is ridiculous that now we have to change rules for certain students because of their religion. She should have known ahead of time that at state meets there is a required uniform, yes the coach is at fault too, but this needs to end now! In public schools religion is not supposed to be an issue! And if it is against her religion to show her body, why the hell did she join the track team of all places, where the uniform is shorts and a tank top!!

  • We may have the said "seperation of church and state", but we really don't. I don't know why Christians complain about it. We're forced to say the pledge in the morning; containing God's name. One nation under God? One nation under Allah! I will say what I want, dress the way I want, and you have nothing to say about it etosha. Whether she is funded by the state or not...the state is funded by Christians who believe in ONE God. We believe in one God.

  • That really sucks for her. She’ll probably have a negative view of America because of this, which is not completely unfounded. I‘ve always thought that school boards committees were nothing more than second rate seats for poor and vengeful politicians. Then again she did clearly break the rules. The rules specifically outlined that her outfit had to be of a single color and it wasn’t. So she is in the wrong despite whatever feelings one might have of the staff. I’m sure someone in that crowd mouthed sneeringly, “Yeah we got that Muslim,” but he was probably flanked by someone mumbling, “What are you color blind?” Who knows what really went on, there is not enough info to really debate anything. Yeah thanks for the incomplete story. I think it will be a help to someone I just don't know who.
