There's been a whole lotta buzz about "Cloverfield"
http://current.com/topics/76014742_cloverfield
since just before "Transformers" came out.
http://current.com/topics/32970743_transformers

First, it was a trailer with no movie title.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=IvNkGm8mxiM

Then it was the Bad Robot folks constantly switching the movie title.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Robot_Productions

Then six actors showed up on the movie's IMDB page.
http://imdb.com/title/tt1060277

Then six MySpace pages for their characters showed up.

Lily - http://www.myspace.com/lily_ford
Hud - http://www.myspace.com/hudsonplatt
Rob - http://www.myspace.com/robbyhawkins
Jason - http://www.myspace.com/jj_hawkins
Beth - http://www.myspace.com/beth_mcintyre

Then sometime between Slusho showing up in "Alias"
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3jmzl_alias-saison-1-...
and Slusho showing up in "Heroes"
http://www.slashfilm.com/2007/11/20/cloverfield-slusho-...
a Slusho website
http://slusho.jp
and Slusho commercial showed up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBee1TuUSJE&feature=...

Then one of the main characters, Rob Hawkins, announces on his MySpace blog that he's been given a job at Slusho...Hence the going away party that happens in the movie on 1.18.08.
http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfmfuseaction=blog.view&a...
(We also see his "brother" wearing a Slusho t-shirt in the "Cloverfield" clips.)

THEN somehow it "leaks out" that Slusho's parent company is called "Tagruato"
http://tagruato.jp
and their main business does deep sea drilling - in areas previously unexplored by man.
http://tagruato.jp/deepsea.php

AND if you click on the map that shows where they're doing this deep sea drilling
http://tagruato.jp/deepsea2.php
and click the nearest point to NYC, it just happens to be the newest deep-sea station that's about to begin drilling.

Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

Maybe someone woke up a big angry monster that lives beneath the sea...and it surfaces and goes towards the lights...of NYC.

  • she called me whisper once. The tone of this explanation was satisfying. I didn't realize she was in this movie.

  • If you let the 1/18/08 page sit idle long enough
(30 minuites plus, you will hear the creatures awesome roar) As I learned the freakin scary hard way, I hadn't realized that I hadn't closed the window on the site and sure enough I heard the inexplicable roar as I was minding my own business here at Current.

  • Alrighty, so they've taken down the Tagruato website, BUT all of the 6 characters logged in to their MySpace sites yesterday.

JJ & his pals ARE great at messing with people.

  • "Cloverfield" became the first monster hit released in 2008, debuting with $41 million, a record opening for January, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Paramount's tale of a giant reptile causing chaos in New York City surpassed the $35.9 million premiere weekend of the "Star Wars" special edition in 1997, the previous best for January.

    1. "Cloverfield," $41 million.

    2. "27 Dresses," $22.4 million.

    3. "The Bucket List," $15.2 million.

    4. "Juno," $10.3 million.

    5. "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," $8.1 million.

    6. "First Sunday," $7.8 million.

    7. "Mad Money," $7.7 million.

    8. "Alvin and the Chipmunks," $7 million.

    9. "I Am Legend," $5.1 million.

    10. "Atonement," $4.8 million.

  • The movie was absolutely amazing. I think the explanation of the monster is better left unknown as it's not that vital to the theme of the film. I know JJ has a knack for viral advertising (check out the numerous LOST websites), but to me the explanation of the monster is a bit of a joke... A slushie company accidentally mutating a blue whale, come on!
