After Obama's big win in Iowa, the question for everyone in New Hampshire was "Is this really the year of the coveted youth voter?"

  • I can only hope that the young people like me do go out and vote.
The only way that we will be the deciding factor is if we make it more real to us and come to realize that we are the future and we are the ones that need to step up, its no longer our moms and dads fight .

  • The youth vote not only can change things in this country but increasingly looks as if it will. Politicians and the media have traditionally not paid any attention to young voters beyond what they can do as volunteers for campaigns. Statistically, youth voters have not come out in large enough numbers for the general election for anyone to pay attention to them. It's not only time for this to change but I believe this will be the election when it does. Until the age of 18, kids have no vote, no voice, no rights and even getting a driver's license or education funding for males is predicated upon them sacrificing themselves and their lives (Selective Service registration requirement) to any whim of war that any President might have no matter how unjustifiable or necessary. Check here for your state's requirement: http://www.sss.gov/FSstateleg.htm. With age comes wisdom but that doesn't apply universally....and ignores the reality that many young people are wise beyond their years. It's time for the youth of this country to stand up and be heard, be counted, be respected as the generation from which our future leaders will be born. Get out there and VOTE!

  • Hillary Clinton at Wellesley. This is the event the media spun as 'playing the gender card.' Look at the faces of the Wellesley students and judge for yourself: inspiring speech to youth or gender politics, as the media spun it.

  • whoframedrudy,

That "card" nonsense the corporate media spun was ridiculous. All candidates, especially Democrats, seek out women and young voters. When she was at Wellesley, she simply stated fact. What, are we too PC we can't do that for fear of offending cultural sensitivities? That entire media debacle was outrageous.

What she did after that Philly debate is what any frontrunner does when being attacked: divert attention and dismiss critics ("the politics of pile-on"). When she did it, the media cried fowl. She can't win. Period.

I'm not a supporter of hers, but the double standard against her has been *ferocious.*

  • If you want to see the caliber of the future youth vote, check out this young man. He could teach our leaders a thing or two about leadership!

  • Have to credit Tori on finding this article--but we're not the only one's who think the Young Vote could be as significant this time around as the Soccer Moms's and evangelicals of the past...

  • dbeckman: I think this quote from that article is pretty telling, "For a group of voters with no memory of a time before Bushes and Clintons, Obama is a fresh face." Think about it...if Hillary Clinton wins, we will have had a Bush or a Clinton in the White House for at least 24 years! I think it's time this particular "Hadfiled & McCoy" political freight train is stopped....don't you?

  • What! For starters one kid said he liked Obama bc he likes basketball and says "give it up" and "shout out". Are you serious..PLEASE I beg everyone to research ALL of the candidates and make a choice dont just vote for some one bc there cool, they have nice hair, there skin is the same as yours or bc you both squat to pee.

As for me I want less big govt and the dollar to actually have some value. As far as im concerned obama seems like a southern preacher that can get the crowd riled up...plus everytime hes asked a question he just starts spouting out change change change and side steps the questions. I guess jedi mind tricks work good on college kids, interview some upperclassmen next time

  • so I have to do my senior thesis on the youth vote.. the millennials in fact. Those in and around born from 1980 to 2001. So in 2008 11 of the 21 groups will be voting... It will be the continuation of a trend of more of us voting. The key point here is that we are hopeful, determined, intelligent, and globalized. We have our problems but we should all be aware the with our generation homicide numbers have gone down, crime has gone down, literacy rates up, etc etc. Weve seen our parents and there parents get only a small way in this "free world" and we are the generation to give the next the oppurtunity for success. We just need to not get stuck in the same cycle and feel it is hopeless. Once we come of age (all of us) we will be a larger voting block them the baby boomers. But let us not be swayed then by icons, and false hero's. Such a large and inexperienced group can be dangerous. We must only learn caution.
