In JANUARY no less, when only four states have held primaries. Even though reportedly Mr. Edwards is the only Democrat who beats every GOP candidate. See a pattern here?

  • Sent to NY TImes this morning regarding an article they wrote about Clinton and Obama and their popularity... I truly wonder if they will print it in their comments section.////////And once again omit the one candidate talking about real change, John Edwards. I am a forty nine year old woman and I don't support Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, who thinks the Republicans are the party of ideas. And in my view any candidates the corporate media in this country prop up as their stars are not the ones I want running this country. John Edwards has set the debate for this campaign with his truthful straight talk about corporate lobbyists and donations running this show and his standing up for the poor in America, but of course he is then minmized because of it because it threatens the status quo of both Clinton and Obama who have taken millions from pharmaceutical companies, tobacco companies, gas and oil companies, etc., all while spewing about "change." Change from what? A corporate Republican status quo to a corporate Democratic status quo? John Edwards is also the only candidate really speaking about climate change which is a crisis affecting us all now. What are the real issues for Clinton and Obama besides their soundbites? Is the only reason people will vote for them because of their gender and race? How does that serve this country well if they truly are not the right ones for the times we live in? I am tired of the corporate media in this country picking my president and telling me that I am a racist or a woman hater for not supporting their picks. I'm sticking with John Edwards regardless of the corporate media's blatant and deliberate censorship of his message, because his is the message for these times.

  • Absolutely right. John Edwards is the only candidate that actually has a platform. He speaks to the people and not for the status quo and corporations. So the corporate media will not allow his message to get out to the voters. The media is pushing Obama and Clinton because they think they can be beat by whichever Republican stooge they put up. If by chance Clinton wins it won't make much difference because she is a Republican anyway. They are counting on Obama not lasting through the South. They are doing it again. If the media can't manage to choose our President for us they will screw with the vote and maybe we will get a Supreme Court President again. This is how the fascist system works.
  • People need to put some thought into why the corporate media has neglected to recognize John Edwards from the very start. He is not looking out for their best interest. He doesn't intend to continue the war in Iraq. The corporate military industrial complex will lose their war gravy train. Edwards is clean so they can't drag him through the mud. All they can do is deny him fair coverage and hope the brain dead public won't notice.
  • So John Edwards was talking about how you cant "nice" people into giving in..and I was just reading MLKs Letter from a Birmingham jail and there's a quote that sung true to that..."Lamentably, it is an historical fact that privileged groups seldom give up their privileges voluntarily." I dont want it to be too late before we stand up and take action against this presidency that has disgraced their country, the media for distorting the election coverage or corporations and lobbyists for controlling Capitol Hill. Like the letter expresses, at some point you have to say enough is enough and take action.

  • That's right. Ignoring the situation won't make it go away. I'm afraid we are going to lose the only person that will help us fix it.
  • Absolutely nkeg87. And according to our Declaration of Independence it is our duty as citizens to do just that.

  • How unfortunate, but if he's no longer competitive, so be it.

Figure he's gonna be Obama's VP if Obama can pull things together this next week. That way the progressives will hedge against any lousy Republican who comes along, including old man McCain!
  • It isn't over yet. And he is only non competitive to those who want it that way and are brainwashing others to think that. And I am one of those who doesn't want it that way, so I'm sticking with John Edwards to the end. And should he drop out which he says he isn't and I hope he doesn't, I am having a very hard time thinking of supporting either of the other two... matter of fact, I won't be supporting either of the other two at all. I will simply hold my nose again in November should John Edwards not get the nomination. Until then I fight with him.

  • You never know when one of the media super stars is going to screw up. Obama has already compared himself with Reagan. Consider that Reagan was senile during his last term and old man Bush was running the show that doesn't make Obama a very good bet. Clinton's husband is taking over more of her campaign and face it he is a famous screw up. So Edwards has a good chance even without any media coverage.
  • Umm... JanforGore, brainwashing means giving the Ludovico Treatment, like in "A Clockwork Orange."

This is just argument because we take a position based upon premises leading to either to a logical conclusion or an opinion.

In this case you want Sen. Edwards to win so badly that it would appear you're exhibiting cognitive dissonance, i.e. that you can't see facts as they empirically are.

I'm a political scientist at SDSU, and I can tell you that the media darlings are not just media darlings, but they actually have a campaign platform that's more than just spit and chewing gum. Yes, they aren't perfect, but when you're the day-in and day-out star of the otherwise boring 24-hour news cycle, they will focus on anything to get the ratings above stagnant.

I have to say Edwards has waged a decent campaign. We all gotta give the man props for standing on his beliefs, and I don't think we should count him out of politics altogether... but the country is not going to vote for him nonetheless. The word we use is "non-competitive" and it just means nothing more than getting less than 15% in any major race. That has now happened and like Rudy Giuliani, they're just a placeholder in the race and shouldn't significantly affect the predicted outcome.

So, I would expect that he will have no choice but to resign until due time that either of the front-runners either pick him as their running mate (again, I predict he joins Obama because their politics are nearly identical when compared with the number of possible permutations of overlap in the race). He's well known, well liked by some, looked down upon a bit by others, but generally his name is not a bring down in the same way Howard Dean's was in 2004.
  • I'm an Edwards supporter, and I concede that he is unlikely to win any of the primaries. I support him because he truly stands up for the middle class. But here's another important reason to vote for him - he will have enough delegates to be the kingmaker at the Democratic convention - which means both candidates will have to incorporate issues we supporters care about or lose the nomination.

Such issues are truly universal health care, immediate, swift and effective policies to combat global warming, taking on corporate lobbyists, wage fairness for the middle class, and pulling out of the Iraq war in his first year in office.

These issues are worth staying until the end for. We must give Edwards this bargaining power, or the other two will not be likely to take up issues that matter to the middle class come convention time.

As much as the corporate media wants to bury John and his message, we must not let it die. Economic justice will triumph. We just need to fight smart. and hard. Thank you.
  • phoenix_fire999, Exactly right. We picked a winner. He may or may not get a chance to prove it but he is still a winner and the best candidate. We will support him in every way to the end.
  • Brainwashing is Armed Forces Radio letting the troops have Rush Limbaugh and not Air America.
  • I agree phoenix_fire999, keep pushing for your guy, I'll push for mine and collectively we both take away from Hil-dawg any support she'll have to wait for her in August.

Everything he's saying is right, he's just saying it in a way that's gotten the hard-blue Dems all bunched up and worried about their incomes. That's why he's fallen behind. But he's not out yet!
  • you guys are right. It's NOT OVER!! I need to do more...I support him all the way because I believe in him. Even though I am contradicting myself, I hope he might win...but I am skeptical. I'll stick with him...!

  • nkeg87, We can't let them convince us to give up on him. We can't let them choose for us.
  • Right on Marilynn, don't give up on your convictions!

  • Look at the chart at the top. The main reason we need Edwards, He can beat McCain by a mile. He look really good in the debate, making points while Clinton and Obama acted like rude children.
  • In my opinion Edwards really stood out in the debates last night. He was actually given almost equal time by the moderator and stood his ground. They even discussed him afterward on CNN and invited him for an interview. (haven't see it yet). My hope is restored but I never gave up! This is the man we REALLY need - he just needs to be heard - damnit!

    January 20, 2008

    The Honorable John R. Edwards
    410 Market Street
    Suite 400
    Chapel Hill, NC 27516

    Dear Senator Edwards:

It was good meeting with you yesterday and discussing my father's legacy. On the day when the nation will honor my father, I wanted to follow up with a personal note.

There has been, and will continue to be, a lot of back and forth in the political arena over my father's legacy. It is a commentary on the breadth and depth of his impact that so many people want to claim his legacy. I am concerned that we do not blur the lines and obscure the truth about what he stood for: speaking up for justice for those who have no voice.

I appreciate that on the major issues of health care, the environment, and the economy, you have framed the issues for what they are - a struggle for justice. And, you have almost single-handedly made poverty an issue in this election.

You know as well as anyone that the 37 million people living in poverty have no voice in our system. They don't have lobbyists in Washington and they don't get to go to lunch with members of Congress. Speaking up for them is not politically convenient. But, it is the right thing to do.

I am disturbed by how little attention the topic of economic justice has received during this campaign. I want to challenge all candidates to follow your lead, and speak up loudly and forcefully on the issue of economic justice in America.

From our conversation yesterday, I know this is personal for you. I know you know what it means to come from nothing. I know you know what it means to get the opportunities you need to build a better life. And, I know you know that injustice is alive and well in America, because millions of people will never get the same opportunities you had.

I believe that now, more than ever, we need a leader who wakes up every morning with the knowledge of that injustice in the forefront of their minds, and who knows that when we commit ourselves to a cause as a nation, we can make major strides in our own lifetimes. My father was not driven by an illusory vision of a perfect society. He was driven by the certain knowledge that when people of good faith and strong principles commit to making things better, we can change hearts, we can change minds, and we can change lives.

So, I urge you: keep going. Ignore the pundits, who think this is a horserace, not a fight for justice. My dad was a fighter. As a friend and a believer in my father's words that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, I say to you: keep going. Keep fighting. My father would be proud.

    Sincerely,

    Martin Luther King, Jr.

  • May God Bless Martin Luther King III. His endorsement might make a huge difference in the election. It shows that he has integrity to have chosen Edwards over Obama. I'm sure it would have been easier to have backed Obama.
  • Very nice letter / endorsement.

  • Do you think if Edwards doesn't get enough delegates to win, that he might be convinced to give his delegates to......AL GORE.... just to shake things up a bit (because they need shaken so badly)? Would it be stealing a nomination if the end result gave Al back what was his? I just can't give up hope (yet) for a winning candidate we can vote FOR, instead of having to vote against the person we dislike the most (again, sigh).

  • My email to C-SPIN:

I have heard so many lies being perpetrated on your shows lately. One of your experts said the polls do not show Edwards beating any Republican candidate. Here are a couple that in fact do. (included links to this and Carolyn Gillis's recent posting)

I also am having a hard time understanding why you insist on only airing one side of the health care debate. Everyone on your shows (shows which are few and far between considering the enormity of the problem) is on the side of continuing and supporting the problem, so I'm not holding my breath for any real solution anytime soon. Meanwhile, according to a recent study published in Health Affairs, at least 101,000 innocent Americans are dieing every year while we fiddle. According to Physicians for a National Health Program, $350 billion health care dollars are being wasted in order to kill them. The truth of this issue will not change, and your continued refusal to defend or even air the truth speaks volumes.
