As the fifth anniversary of Operation Iraqi Freedom nears, the fabulists are again trying to weave their own version of the war. The latest myth is that the "surge" is working.

Here's an interesting commentary pointing the finger straight at Britain in their role in perpetuating the myth.
"The government's top foreign policy advisers were as inept as their US counterparts in failing to see that removing Saddam Hussein in 2003 was likely to lead to a nationalist insurgency by Sunnis and Shias and an Islamist government in Baghdad, run by allies of Iran, the Guardian has learned.
None of Whitehall's 'Arabists' warned Tony Blair of the difficulties which have plagued the occupation. The revelation undermines the British claim that it was US myopia which was to blame for the failure to foresee what would happen in postwar Iraq." -
Everyone and their mother knew what would happen. We just ignored it.

What a mess. Iraq is a rubik's cube with more colors than sides. It is impossible to solve. The most important thing to do at this point is to sneak away in the night, hopefully at a time when our absence will not lead to widespread violence, and count our lucky stars that we get to leave Iraq, unlike the residents that will be forced to sift through the wreckage we have made for the next twenty years.

The "Surge" was supposed to momentarily bring an end to the violence so that the "coalition government" could work together and pass important bi-partisan legislation. That didn't work because all the parties involved in the "coalition government" freaking hate each other. Imagine if we created a coalition here int he states composed of the Ku Klux Klan, the Nation of Islam, The Aryan Nation and the Jewish Anti-Defamation League. Gee, ya think these people would be able to work together to pass important power-sharing legislation? Would the KKK really tell the Nation of Islam, "Sure! You can get an equal share of the oil profits! No problem. We're all equal here." So the US has the great idea of throwing all these rival religious factions together and the results are about what you'd expect. And as for the "success" of the surge -- my understanding is that the reason the violence has waned is simply because everyone is dead! The neighborhoods have been ethnically purged of their hated rivals (either by killing them or because they fled the area and moved to a different part of the country). So the US shows up basically after the civil war is winding down and declares victory.

Wait. It's not working? We're not winning? I don't know what we would win, but I thought we were. A war of ideology with no fixed target based on deception surely must have a winner. Right? RIGHT?!
