Germany has taken an unusually firm (but welcome) stance on the "Church" of Scientology, treating it as a commercial organisation rather than a religion. The German historian Guido Knopp, who has written a number of books on Hitler and his inner circle, has further rattled the organisation by drawing parallels between footage of Tom Cruise, wearing a large medallion and speaking from a podium to Scientologist acolytes, to Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels' speech in a Berlin sports stadium.

Scientology is a business venture, but aren't all organized religions? They all put their energy into self-promotion and survival of the organisation, not the spiritual well being of their flocks. Scientology is different only in that is more blatant about this. I was a Sea Organisation member twice and what most people miss is the militaristic nature of the Scientology vis a vis the Sea Organization. All staff wear militaristic uniforms, learn martial arts and handgun management, and address the ministers/officers as "sir" and "ma'am". They use intimidation to keep people in line, and try and demand complete isolation from non-sympathetic family members, labeling them as "supressives". Tom won't have experienced any of these things because he is a celebrity, and Scientology has always been star-struck. Now that's scary!
