The deadliest conflict since the second world war is that which continues today in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This survey reports that 5.4 million Congolese have been killed in less than a decade, and at present, about 45,000 people die each month -- half of them small children. While not all of the reported deaths are directly related to combat, the preventable diseases and starvation that have been aggravated by conflict are claiming many thousands of lives.
"Congo is one of 11 countries where 20% of children die before the age of five, according to a Unicef report released yesterday."

The situation in Congo is dire. Take a look at this Current International pod with Christof Putzel as he visits a village that was a site of a massacre in the Congo.
-
And here is a VC2 pod about looting in the refugee camps by the soldiers who are supposed to be taking care of the people.

Are there any solutions to this terrible situation?
I hope so, even if not a full solution surely these numbers could be minimised with some simple measures? -
i can't believe that i sometimes have it bad, i saw a special today in national geographic about this exact same thing, and it makes me throw up and throw my ipod
away.
i want to donate the meaning of my life to these people that get killed in the name ignorance. -
Where's America? What no oil in the Congo? Oh!!!

Jesus.
I really don't have any words for that. It's beyond monstrous.
This would definitely be an excellent time to be playing World Police.
Where are the damned cops when you need them...? -
There's gotta be a way to help this situation. That is a tremendous amount of lives(children's lives) to be lost over things we take for granted such as an abundance of food and being able to protect ourselves from many diseases.

Take a look at this video about Marcus Bleasdale's documentation of the situation in the Congo. The award winning photojournalist spent more than 8 years in the DRC, recording the horrors of a decade of war. The images are haunting and incredible. And he provides a long list of links to ways you can help. 5.4 million is such a devastating figure. It needs to have more attention in the media. It's heartbreaking that this and other atrocities continue to go underreported, while the fluffy sensational celebrity news is plastered all over our front pages.

That was an excellent link.
Mainstream news is constantly taking a giant dump on its social responsibilities.
It makes me so angry, that I'm gonna stop typing now, as not to start spewing obscene things. -
abby, I agree completely. This was the exact thought I had the other day when Heath Ledger's picture was plastered all over the front page of Current and every other website. This link was lost somewhere on the bottom of the page, or even the second page. Although Ledger's death was a tragedy, there is a bigger picture. This is the loss of one celebrity vs. the loss of 45,000 lives a month.
The link you provided was amazing, the images of the children and the women especially are burned in my brain. It makes me sick to think that so many children are dying and that the women are being raped continuously.
Diarrhea, malaria, HIV, and child soldiers. We can do something to help these people.
