...with a plastic bag ban set for the city. London councils have approved a bill to encourage reusable bags and reduce waste...good thing for a city that currently uses 1.6 billion plastic bags per year.

Good for London. I have to say, I love my cloth grocery bags. They're really strong, have good handles, and keep things colder longer. Everybody bring your own!

When I was there for a semester abroad, most of the communities seemed to whole-heartedly embrace the reuseable bags. Each costs a pound or less, and they are definately useable for other things!
I think in the next 5 years or so, plastic will be a thing of the past in the UK. I hope it spreads in America, just the same.-

Ireland started charging for carrier bags a couple of years ago - we all now use reusable ones and it cut down the litter in both towns and countryside enormously.
Its OK and works well.

go london!!!
i use half and half,
paper and plastic
than i just burry them in backyard. -
Err.. I think I should mention that the reason we charge for plastic bags is to STOP people burying them !
Plastic bags don't rot and will be there next time you dig your garden - even in 50 years !
Good idea with the paper bags though (I burn mine ..)
