BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University has closed the Bloomington campus chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi for two years after finding it violated the school's hazing policy.

Yes, hazing can be funny, but usually isn't.
Saddening and maddening that it is still widespread within the Greek community to engage in hazing in the interest of create group cohesion. I would love to see fraternities to at least make an attempt to learn new practices and develop new traditions that are actually effective at creating a "fraternal" environment. -
Hazing is juvenile and can be deadly. Just go and get drunk together; isn't that enough "manly bonding" for ya!
I'm all for making college a fun experience for all, including those in fraternities, but can't it be done in a way that doesn't involve berating people.-

@jdlevin:
I don't know you personally, but you sound like one of those hot-tubbing, Marin County, liberals. If grown-ass kids can't abuse each other in a perpetuating cycle of dehumanizing "bonding" then what are they supposed to do? Study?
Why study when Mom and Dad are not only paying for tuition, but Fraternity dues?
Solution: pay people to haze each other. (C.F. my previous post)-

How about building a house together with "Habitat for Humanity" or maybe an Outward Bound experience as a bonding/brotherhood building experience? Hate to say it but the rationale for hazing being necessary to build a bond seems pretty weak.

If you don't want to be humiliated and possibly seriously injured, don't join the fraternity.
They are all "adults."
I'm under the impression that no one is forcing them to run these gauntlets.
There are initiation rituals all over the world, ingrained in many different cultures, large and small.
Many of them involve terrible pain, suffering, humiliation, and even physical mutilation.
Nobody's telling them to knock it off.
Beating someone over the head with the "eat granola and feel gushy about everything" attitude is the same as beating someone over the head with your religion.
Annoying as hell.
Let the frat boys feel the pain of their choices, take their own risks, and reap the (apparent) benefits, if that's how they intend to spend their college years.
You know. Instead of learning stuff. -
Universities need to outlaw such hazing rituals and have severe to criminal penalties for those perpetuating this insane and immature action.
-
Humdrum,
While I respect and agree with your views, these hazing rituals are constructed in such a way that it psychologically very difficult to get out once you get in.
From Stockholm Syndrome to the Foot-in-the-Door technique and others, there are many theories in social psychology and other fields that explain why young boys (and girls), who usually don't have any idea of the scope of what may happen to them, might continue to engage in a process that debases and humiliates them. -
Ah
Indeed, my opinion is probably quite biased, since my inflated ego allowed me to view myself as "above" the pack-monkey mentality while I was in college.
Come to find, there are many, many packs of monkeys in the world, and all of them are very sneaky.
Still, I'd guess informing them instead of insulting/ threatening them (as some people enjoy doing) would be a better route to deter overly dangerous behavior.
If they ignore solid facts and go through trouble to evade legal bindings, just to be beaten with sticks and exposed to the elements, then perhaps they shouldn't be breeding in the first place. -
HMMM! Hazing is not hilarious, not fun, not legitimate and certainly not human. It demeans people. It creates an atmosphere of threat. It's a form of brain-washing, forcing a person to surrender their will to a Collective that 'protects' them only if they keep the secrets. The word 'protect' is debatable. Achievement is not attained by right-minded intelligence or ability. You have to sell your soul and inevitably your darkest secrets are held as collateral in the event you become enlightened, a whole person with character and principles. What a horrid thing to be subjected to. Evil operates under cover.

i didnt join a fraternity to have a "lifetime of connections"...i joined for the ultimate college experience! and i absolutely 100% got it! if you were never in one, then why are you having an opinion on what you believe goes on behind the doors of greek life?
i studied harder in college...all because of frat life! 2.5 gpa or higher to stay in. parties and girls? yep, tons, but that's college! hazing? im sure there was a little of that...not in mine(; comparing hazing to the "abu graib" tortures, is a bit much...don't you think?-

Look at it this way, it gets you ready for any secret U.S. prisons you may get thrown into in the future.

Unless it is a community service Frat/Sorority it really is just another version of high school senior "cools only quad" zone. Rather elitist if you ask me. I even tried and rushed for a year; and it was not any different than that.
I figured I could get wasted, laid, and sleep through a 2.5 on my own, and I did. With a 3.78 though.
They should have shut that frat down for hazing. These kids will do anything to be cool or accepted. They can find other ways to "initiate" like a gang style drive by or something. Oh wait they already do violent crimes.. just to each other. No wonder the future of America is looking bleak. -

As a brother of AEPi I would like to inform everyone that this is not what Fraternity life is about. And that our nation office quickly deactivated the Indiana University chapter. They also are taking legal action against the so called "brothers". As a brother of AEPi I am disgusted by the actions of these "men". They are a complete miss representation of an organization that promotes brotherhood and education. I am ashamed and I grieve for those young men who were put through such a terrible process. That is not how you build Brotherhood.
