KNOCKING opens the door on Jehovah's Witnesses. They refuse blood transfusions on religious grounds, but they embrace the science behind bloodless surgery. This cut-down from the feature-length film examines one teenager's test of faith with that very principle.

  • Thank you so much for putting this pod on Tv. This is only a fraction of what Jehovah's Witness stand up for. That guys faith is truly stong. I understand completly how they feel because i am a jehovah's witness to. people discrimante against us and say things that are untrue about us it's good to see some thing that shine us in a better light. I know that jehovah will bless him and his family for their strong faith and putting their trust in him.

  • Dissident JW speaks out on,Jehovah's Witnesses beliefs:

    A) They are at your door to recruit you for enslavement to their watchtower corporation, they will say that "we are just here to share a message from the Bible" this is deception right off.

    B) The 'message' is their false Gospel that Jesus is ruling in heaven already since 1914.The problem with this is it's not just a cute fairy tale,Jesus warned of the false prophets who would claim "..look he is here in the wilderness,or see here he is at the temple"

    C) Their anti-blood transfusion ban has killed hundreds if not thousands
    D) once they recruit you they will "love bomb" you in cult fashion to also recruit your family & friends or cut them off. There are many more dangers,Jehovah's Witnesses got a bad rap for good and valid reasons.

99% of the world has rejected the teachings of the Watchtower Jehovah?s Witnesses, the darker truth is they are a destructive and oppressive organization.

  • It's too bad that JW's can't reason out this blood issue for themselves. Had they gone to a Jewish hospital they could have explained to Seth why accepting a blood transfusion is not a violation of the law G-d gave to the Jews thousands of years ago to " not eat blood". You see all the blood transfusions in the world will not save the life of a starving man! Blood is food only, if it is eaten. A blood transfusion has no direct nutritional value to the patient, hence it is not a violation of that law for a Jew to accept one. At any rate, Jews know that all laws, even the Sabbath laws can be set aside to save the life of a human.
Sadly, the Watchtower leaders have condemned themselves for the bloodguilt of an untold number of Jehovah's Witnesses who have died needlessly due to this twisted interpretation of Jewish laws. JW's, please stop committting this Watchtower santioned ritual suicide and letting your children die needlessly. Talk to a Rabbi for a further explanation before you let a relative or child die. Write to your leaders for an explantion as to why they enforce this rule on JW's when even their leaders, the Governing Body, did not vote unanimously on this teaching. Ask them who voted yes and who voted no for the current ban on blood transfusions and why they voted no!. Your life depends on the truth and facts- don't accept anymore weasel words from your leaders. Would you think differently, if you knew that a deceased member of the Governing Body had accepted a blood transfusion in the past in order to extend his elderly life? After all, it is a conscience matter between you and G-d. The conscience of Jews is clear on the issue of blood transfusions.

  • I am an ex-Jehovah's Witness and I agree with the people who have stated that JW's is a cult and that they have some very dark sides.

Because I have been "disfellowhipped" my cousins have not spoken to me in 25 years. They told me when I was thrown out that I was like a zombie or a living dead person because I had rejected the teachings of Jehovah and therefore I was condemned to eternity in the grave.

Once I was dead no one would ever remember me and I would cease to exist; no heaven and no hell and no resurrection.

It so true about the fact that the leaders of the Church try to isolate you from family members that aren't sympathetic or refuse to take bible classes. They do in fact "love bomb" you as was stated before. I experienced it.

I cannot tell you how many years it took me after being thrown out as an Apostate person from the JW's to recuperate my self worth and my self esteem. I bought into that crap about being a walking dead person and I allowed myself to descend into the depths of hell through debauchery, because I thought "What the hell does it matter to be good anymore anyways?"

If anybody wants to know the details of my debauchery read my post and see my documentary at "HIV is not a death sentence." It's on current under my name Jubal.

  • I hardly have any problems with J.W.'s, and I would have absolutely no problems with them if J.W.'s as a group would take me seriously the first time I say I'm not interested. However, they tend to send the same two yahoos to my door once a week to try to convert me.

I've only heard of one person successfully ending the continuous attempts at house call conversions, and she did it because she beat the two converters at their own game.

It was a buddies grandmother, and when the J.W.'s came to her door she let them in and listened very patiently to them. When they were done a few hours later she said that it was her tern to tell them about her beliefs. Upon hearing this the J.W.'s attempted to politely leave, and ended up leaving without much tactical grace. After they left without being kind enough to listen to what she had to say, my friends grandmother called the J.W. church in town and complained to no end about how the J.W.'s that came to her door were so rude to spend all of that time talking and not even bother to listen to a sweet little old lady. They NEVER knocked on that old ladies door again.

  • The Watchtower Society was shown to have knowingly and purposely misrepresent secular facts to back up their policy of no blood.

    http://www.ajwrb.org/newsletter/January-06.html

"An essay entitled, "Jehovah's Witnesses, Blood Transfusions, and the Tort of misrepresentation," found in Baylor University's peer reviewed Journal of Church and State?s Autumn 2005 issue, exposes the vulnerability of the Watchtower Society to tort (liability) claims because of the religion?s misrepresentations of secular writers."

There is currently a case in Canada using this basis to sue the Watchtower.

  • If you just tell them that you are a disfellowhipped JW and you have no intention of coming back they will never come back to your door again.

  • This is an amazing excerpt, but even more amazing and interesting are the comments from readers here, from the enthusiastic JW to the disfellowshipped JW to the Jewish man.

The clip from the film makes Seth's refusal to do surgery until he could find a bloodless version of it, almost heroic. "Here is a man standing up for his principles despite the fact that he might die."

On the other hand, as the commenters have pointed out, many more JW's probably continue to die needlessly as a result of their church's dictum, which is possibly hypocritical or even illegal, and certainly very cruel.

The take-away point for me here is certainly that the extremism of all religions, from the fanatical Islamists we have been exposed to since 9/11 to the annoying but apparently not-so-innocuous Jehova's Witnesses -- are all detrimental to the happiness and independence of the greater humanity.

This viewpoint comes to me after seeing the pod AND reading the comments. It is a tribute to Current's interactive journalism that this new synthesis of information succeeds so brilliantly. Way to go!

But back to topic, I wonder if the full feature from Independent Lens would lead me to the same conclusion?

And if not, who bankrolled the film? I am curious...

  • I just wish they would quit pimping their kids for weekend proselytizing in our community. It's not only a major interuption on the weekends but you can't help but feel so sorry for the kids being used like that (and brainwashed) that it's tempting to call Child Services.

  • Varex_Sythe: Too bad that grandmother didn't live in Florida. Under the new FL gun laws, homeowner's need very little reason at all to shoot anyone on their property. She could have just greeted them at the door....with a shotgun!

  • Doesn't the bible essentialy say that preserving life is priority number one and that any sin can be broken in order to do so? How is it that some one can claim they belive/falllow the teachings of the bible and not put saving a life first.

  • I don't have a problem with JW but every sunday they would pass by and that was bugging my dad. So it became a routine that we don't open doors on sundays.

My grandma was a JW and since I was young she was trying to convert me. My mom was JW and my dad was Catholic. At the age of 18th I was suppose to pick a religion.

anyways last year I had to fly home for my grandma's funeral. The main reason was that she needed blood because she was losing it really fast due to some health problems. And since it was against her religion, she signed a paper. (none of her kids knew, until it was too late to do a blood transfusion)

She was so energetic when I left her earlier, and a month later she died just because of her refusal for blood transfusion. I couldn't believe it and to this day I don't want to become religious and have to think "hmm do I want to live or obey my religious beliefs?"

  • Despite the negative, and a few positive comments on J.W., I found this pod to be quite excellent. It was really great story and shed light on how people deal with life and it's difficulties but keeping what they believe to be sacred. This was really well done.

  • I am a young Jehovah's Witness myself, and I was pleased to see this pod on current. I believe that man to be courageous and heroic.
But I am, however, offended by the accusations against Jehovah's Witnesses's. I strongly believe in my religion, and would refuse a blood transfusion myself. But I was not brainwashed, nor was I enslaved or forced into a cult. I decided on my own. True, both my parents are Jehovah's Witnesses, but they have supported my athiest sister just as they have supported me. I was first influenced by my mother, but I have done plenty research on many other religions, and I have decided that being a Jehovah's Witness is what I believe is right. When we "harass" you on Sundays, it isn't to purposely bother you, or to recruit you in anyway, we are simply spreading the good word like the Bible tells us.

  • This pod really captured my attention. My family which consists of my dad, mom, sister and myself are Catholic. My mom's side of the fam. is also Catholic. However, most of my dad's side of the family are Jehovah's Witnesses. I have to admit, I have judged them as they have judged me. I never understood their belief as I think they never understood mine, but this video actually made me understand them a little better. I know I may not agree to it, but I find very admirable what he did opting for another type of transplant. I'm pretty sure anybody who he is a faithful Catholic, Protestant, etc. will make the effort to do what they can do not go against their beliefs.

  • Congrats to this young man for finding the strength to live and seek alternatives while also keeping his own personal beliefs in tact. And kudos to a very loving father who also put his own life on the line to save his son.
I am not affiliated with any religion nor do I want to be. I believe all religions to be "cults", with 1 thing in common: Force our will through fear. The Bible and all it's various forms are all man made and because of that, flawed. People bend and twist these words for their own benefit. I have yet to meet a single person who follows the gospel as it's stated. However I have met many people who pick and choose what to follow and what is "too hard" to follow.
Why can't people simply come up with their own set of values and beliefs that are unique to them as a person? Beliefs that guide them on "the straight and narrow" and let them be accountable to themselves and not some higher power that we aren't even sure exists.

  • As a Jehovah's Witness, I have to say that this documentary was quite accurate in their depiction and I admire that they neither glorified nor bashed our beliefs. In terms of blood transfusions, I've come to understand on my own why I shouldn't partake in them. True, my mother was the one who started me out in this faith, but it was ultimately my decision and my decision alone to get baptized. With all of the alternatives out there, it's a wonder that the non-acceptance of blood transfusions is still an issue, but I cannot control that. I can control my conscience, however, and that means abstaining from blood in addition to other things that we don't approve of. Kudos to Current for showing a part of this documentary.

  • What is amazing to me is that "bloodless surgery" exists. The strength of the faith of this young man made it possible for him to take part in research that may save the lives of many many others with this bold new surgical technique.

  • Jehovah has been unmasked in this new book from by Rev. Nathaniel J. Merritt

The True Identity of the Bible-God Revealed

    Introduction

    Removing God’s Mask:
The author, Nathaniel J. Merritt, has been hitchhiking
his way to Enlightenment since he was a teen. Becoming a Jehovah's Witness at age 15, he ran away from home at 17, and hitchhiked to San Jose, CA to escape from his rageaholic father. After some adventures there, he hitchhiked home to Michigan, where he was shunned by the Jehovah's Witnesses at 19 for smoking pot and having sex. This sent him into a downward spiral where he hit rock bottom. Shortly afterward he was born again as a Jesus Freak in 1973. Then a fellow Jesus Freak taught him to meditate, and this opened many new inner vistas. This spiritual renewal led him to become a Baptist minister in 1980, and there he remained for 15 years.

Then Merritt began to yearn for something more than
he was getting from Christianity. So he dove into the
deep waters of Zen Buddhism, and even became a
Buddhist priest. Finding Buddhism “not a good cultural
fit” after ten years, he returned to Christianity, but not as a Fundamentalist. Some say he returned as a heretic and blasphemer...

This book is the culmination of all his seeking and
study, as well as his many and varied spiritual
experiences. In this book, Merritt draws back the curtain on an ancient mysterious, spiritual path that the Catholic church has fought tooth and nail since Christianity began. Few understand this ancient path, and even fewer have been initiated into it's secrets. Keeping it light and easy to read, the author takes the reader down the rabbit hole of the real Matrix, and turns the world upside down and inside out. Discover for yourself, in your own Bible, the lies of God in the Garden of Eden, and the Truth told by the Serpent.

    ++++++++++++++

I have been reading this book and it is a page turner. I am so blown away by this book because my life parallels the author's life in many ways. I arrived at the same conclusions as the author in my own spiritual search, but I was to afraid to voice them openly.

Jehovah is Satan. There I said it.

    Jehovah is Satan.

The "Heavenly Father" that Jesus talked about, if in fact he was a real person, is not the Jehovah of the Hebrews.

Jehovah was the Kosmokrator, creator gods of the world and they dwell in darkness, there is no light in them. They are the Devils who rebelled against the "Heavenly Father" and they have been toying with us ever since they created us to die. It's all been a big lie from the beginning and the Serpent, Sophia, was telling the truth.

Check it out if you dare to blaspheme and be a heretic...hahahahaha
