"James Dobson, the founder and head of the evangelical media and counseling group Focus on the Family, is constantly described by the media as a power broker, kingmaker, and 'the Christian right's most powerful leader.'"
I found this gem buried in the article:
"A recent issue of Dobson's Focus on the Family Magazine highlighted his widely dispersed global audience: 'Indonesia now has a potential Focus audience of 70 million people. In Malaysia each year, Focus airs hundreds of 90-second James Dobson commentaries in Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants, over the public address system in supermarkets, and on the radio to a predominantly Muslim population of more than 24 million.'"

This is so disgusting. And a perfect example of Religion "in bed with" Commercialism.

Don't forget Tom Monaghan, founder and CEO of Domino's Pizza and devout evangelical who not only has started his own religious town in Florida called Ave Maria but who some say uses company funds to finance a cult: http://www-tech.mit.edu/V111/N18/birnby.18o.html AND http://www.epluribusmedia.org/archives/features/2006/03...

Are you kidding me, is anyone free to go anywhere without trying to be recruited anymore? It's bad enough I have to drive by and see billboards, now people can't even eat shitty chicken in peace anymore?

idealist, what is there to get? Dobson's Focus on the Family is using KFC to broadcast their Christian sermons to a mostly Muslim crowd.

@smorrisey. Nice video. But do you really think that BTFO is Germane in this situation? The reason I posted this story is not lost on most of the other commenters. The invisible hand can not react precisely enough to the sort of cultural bad press shenanigans like this can create. If you found that every time you went to your favorite Pakistani restaurant, while waiting to be seated, there were TV's playing 90 second clips about submitting your life to god, and how there is only one god and Mohammad is his prophet (and oh yeah, send money). I'm sure you would not only never go there again, but also think that Pakistani's are A-holes for pushing your religious beliefs on you. Maybe I am wrong; maybe you like being sold something as personal as religion, but I wouldn't excuse this type of behavior on the basis of "it's capitalism, people." Are you really okay with all of the bad press and ill will toward Americans this will foster? And if this is just capitalism, should we all sell our YUM! Brands stock and stop patronizing Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, Long John Silvers', and A&W?

My dad, upon finding out this information, wrote a short letter to YUM! Brands. I'll post it here.
"I was just reading an article on Yahoo about The Rev. James Dobson's Focus on the Family. It stated that you broadcast his 90 second spots in KFC outlets in predominantly Muslim Malaysia. Being no fan of the Malaysian government, I am still appalled that you are letting your restaurants are being used as a mouthpiece for the extreme and smugly bigoted Christian right. No wonder the rest of the world sees us as arrogant and insensitive. I shall stop patronizing your restaurants and tell everyone I know to do the same. That goes for the entire YUM Brands family. I'll miss Taco Bell but your corporation sponsors' extreme ideologies that are helping drag this nation backward. I'll support local restaurants instead. This comment will now become an e-mail that will be distributed to many like-minded people."-

JordanRoth: People would have to stop patronizing the restaurants by the hundreds of thousands for it to make a dent in their bottom line....but admirable to stand up and be heard (your Dad) nonetheless.

funny how often we Americans can't keep our noses out of other peoples business...or our religion for that matter - or our wars, oil drilling, and farm subsidies...
