Qtrax is the world's first fully-licensed advertising supported peer-to-peer music-sharing service, free to listeners, and offering the largest selection of music tracks of any authorized online music source. It launches today (Jan 27th) at Midem, the annual international music market in Cannes, France.

Update: Looks like it could be too good to be true. See comments below.

  • Too bad they didn't better prepare themselves for the server load they would get. Going to their site produces this reponse: "Due to overwhelming demand, Qtrax.com is currently unavailable. Please check back in 24 hours to download the first, free, and legal P2P music application. Thank you for your understanding."

  • My thoughts exactly. What did they think was going to happen? You put the word "free" and just about anything together and people will come running.

  • Tragically, no Mac support until March.

  • Damn... this is going to force me to plug in my PC (just for a few hours) and get some long lost music! Then I wait for March!

  • It is odd that they launched today after all this financial market mess. I smell a rat. Someone's getting away with some criminal stuff, here, I can just feel it. Oh well, free music!!!
  • Givin it up for free... to a point. I think this was a long time coming... and the music industry is finally realizing that there's just not as much money in music anymore. (there's still a lot...just not through record sales). This article has a couple other links to free music sites too.

  • Sounds awesome but three of the four companies reported to be involved have apparently denied having anything to do with it.

Qtrax.com still isn't letting people download the app either. Hmm...
