An artist combined the images of Anne Frank and a Palestinian kaffiyeh "to create an idealistic image in which both states exist alongside one another in peace." A Dutch Jewish group feels this is distasteful and condemned the distribution of the image.

The keffiyeh is definitely becoming a hot fashion accessory. Take a look at this VC2 pod about the scarf's ironic commercial appeal in London.

Why would it be controversial to appear around Anne Frank's neck? Well, to begin, it's a symbol of Palestinian nationalism. Anne Frank was Jewish. It certainly is an idealistic image, but then with any political cartoon or illustration, a certain group is bound to be upset by it. I don't find this particularly distasteful. Nothing more so than other political cartoons. Were Anne Frank illustrated as wearing Hitler's uniform or something -- THAT would be cause for concern.

ah yes, the power of images. Anne Frank dressed like Hitler would be utterly distasteful, but what about Ariel Sharon, Ehud Barak, or even Golda Meir clad in a nazi or afrikaner uniform. that would really piss people off. i like the keffiyeh and i think it looks pretty hip. are they available in Wisconsin? it kind of reminds of white boys wearing do-rags. originally do-rags were worn to bed at night so one (usually a black man with relaxed hair and a ton of pomade in it) wouldn't mess up the waves in their hair while sleeping. it wasn't a fashion accessory to be worn by the likes of Eminem. but i love seeing it because, for one it's ridicules and makes me laugh, and two it's multiculturalism in practice. the sharing/melding of cultures is seen in the way we dress, the food we eat, and the music we listen to. cultures are living, breathing things that are constantly evolving. the Anne Frank image and the reaction to it, lets me know that some people don't want things to change, and want a "pure" culture (which doesn't exist) for themselves. irony is great. what's next Che Guevara wearing a Mcdonalds uniform?

I don't think it'll be Che Guevara wearing a McDonald's uniform - more likely clutching his McDiploma...
You're right though Jason, youth and cultures only develop through regeneration, they are constantly developing...gotta love a bit of bricolage in your life. -
I think you guys are on to something here. Perhaps the best way to bring about peace between Israelies and Palestinians is the right kind of marketing. If Israeli children start to see Palestinian culture as "hip" and "cool" and start dressing like them and talking like them, they might be less inclined to shoot Palestinian children when they go in for their mandatory military service.
But seriously, must we use Anne Frank as this kind of symbol? I doubt the artist who decided to use her image gave much thought to the actual human being she was and all the horrible suffering she went through. She HAS become a symbol, that's true, but it's a symbol of innocence destroyed by brutal, soulless ideology, and should not be associated with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which she had absolutely nothing to do with.
