On Friday, Michael Mukasey, the man who is in charge of the US "Justice" Department, admitted that he keeps a prtrait of George Orwell in his office. Yes he keeps a picture of the man who wrote "1984" on his wall. Holy S@#%...Please allow me a second for my head to stop ringing. The horrible irony of this story has left me in a coma-like state.
OK, I'm back... anyway, Big Mike says that his inspiration is not the Big Brother society that Orwell envisioned but his writing style. Later he said he enjoyed Playboy for the articles....

Meanwhile, he's still being tight-lipped about his views on waterboarding, saying the procedure is not clearly illegal and that it was a difficult question. He has said that all methods of interrogation in use by the CIA right now are legal, and that waterboarding isn't among them, at least not right now. That's not to say it couldn't be again sometime in the future...

But Orwell didn't envision the Big Brother dystopia in a positive light. If I were in charge of the US Justice Department, I might have a picture of Orwell on my wall to remind me of what I should never let my country become.
And yes, because he was a great writer. :) -
Well at least we know were not totally paranoid when we begin to compare the type of world we live in, to fictional writings like that of Orwell's. I for one am relieved, I was starting to think that I was crazy.

I'm actually impressed that this guy likes Orwell. Let's give him some credit and assume he appreciates him for the right reasons. The article said he's a fan of "Politics and the English Language" -- if he absorbed even a tenth of the message of that essay, then we're better off than we, perhaps, thought we were.

Sloan, you took the words right out of my mouth, I couldn't agree with you more. Now if only we could find the copy of Hitlers "Mein Kampf" in Bush's desk, we'd be all set. Wait! I forgot, that book doesn't have any pictures in it, scratch that.
