Shell Oil CEO acknowledges need for alternative energy, environmental issues

Can big oil really be coming around? From the article:

"[T]he world's current predicament limits our maneuvering room. We are experiencing a step-change in the growth rate of energy demand due to population growth and economic development, and Shell estimates that after 2015 supplies of easy-to-access oil and gas will no longer keep up with demand.

"As a result, society has no choice but to add other sources of energy - renewables , yes, but also more nuclear power and unconventional fossil fuels such as oil sands. Using more energy inevitably means emitting more CO2 at a time when climate change has become a critical global issue."

  • It's not a matter of whether they WANT to come around. The simple fact is that they can no longer profit from selling oil once it costs so much to extract it that nobody will be able to afford it anymore. We've already past the peak of how much oil the earth can yield, so it's only going to get harder and more expensive to extract it as time goes on.

The oil companies HAVE NO CHOICE in this matter. It's not like they're suddenly developing a conscience...they simply recognize that to have any hope of maintaining the ridiculous amounts of wealth and power they currently have, they MUST switch to alternative fuel sources.

Unfortunately they should have done this a long time ago, but the people in charge of the companies back then knew they would be retired long before the crisis, and the people in charge now are going to have to pay for the greed of their predecessors. It's ALMOST poetic justice, but not quite. It's the average person who is going to suffer the most from the encroaching crisis.

  • So there was just a link a few hours ago about an ex "tony blair era" official from the UK basically admitting they went to war for oil.

Now Shell's CEO is admitting we do actually, NEED to develop alternative/ greener sources of energy.

That "crazy left" the GOP was jabbering about four years ago doesn't seem so crazy now does it?

  • and all of this happens to happily coincide with the release of what can only be described as obscene profits for the company....quelle coincidence...could this new-found conscience be being used as a cloak to cover their implicit greed ? could it...?

  • When I hear "more nuclear power" I can't help but think it's codespeak for "drop nuclear weapons on OPEC" and steal their oil.
