John Edwards has dropped his bid for the presidency. He made the announcement at 1 pm EST today in a speech in New Orleans, saying he expects a Democrat to ultimately win the general election. He said he had received pledges from both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that they would make fighting poverty a top priority.
Edwards chose not to endorse a candidate at this time, but may do so in the future, according to an aide.

Rudy Giuliani is also expected to bow out after his poor showing in Florida. He is expected to endorse John McCain when he does so.
-
If this is true. We will see Obama/Edwards. I hope!
-
twodee - that would bring me out of deep depression!
-
This is so sad. He has been an inspiration and I had hoped he would pull out some late heroics.
Now I just hope that Obama or Clinton will have him as an integral part of their campaign. He has quite a bit of work to do, and the Executive Branch needs someone of his character/integrity and commitment to help restore some trust back in the Oval Office. -
Yeah, Obama/Edwards could be a very good ticket.
-
I am so sad for our country. The corporate media is running the show. This is how Russia used to be. They only allow you to see and know what they want. This iis a very sad day.

Not only am i depressed by this. I am also a bit afraid for America. Are we seeing the plan that many said was already in place? Clinton takes it? If we do not move behind Obama there will be NO change. The corporations rule. i am so over watching people all around me suffer at the hand of the big corp/media/$$ creature. The revolution starts. number 9 is 2009.
-
Pundits are suggesting that if Edwards stays silent, his support base may go Clinton. However, there's speculation that he may support Obama.

Okay Al Gore get off your ass and run now. We have no hope unless you do. You don't really expect us to vote for Clinton do you? I don't even like Obama, how could I be expected to vote for him? The first step in saving the world is saving America. RUN.

Damn it! Thank you, Mr. Edwards, for a campaign I was *proud* to support.
For those who think Obama would select him as AG (Edwards won't run as VP again): no way. Edwards is a damn pit bull and that runs counter to Obama's "unity" theme of "healing" the country.-

i'm sorry too...but I'm glad people like everyone of you here, are somewhere in the world today... y'all make me proud. thank you.

After a few tears I thought about the kind of person John Edwards is and how angry he was at Kerry when he quit. It makes me wonder and worry about Elizabeth.

I'm so proud to say I voted for him yesterday. And I'm so sad to see that's its not possible for him to continue. I was hoping that at least by voting he'd see that he does have support. I dont want him to quit altogether. That's why I like Al Gore; After, that fucked up election he didnt sit around and give up. He got involved still with Current and environmental stuff. So I hope Edwards continues and I pray that he gets into the White House.
-
Did he have to pick my birthday to do this? I have tears in my eyes... I vowed I would not invest my heart and soul into any other poltical campaign because of the corrupt corporate stench that prevails, and again was proven right. This gives even more credence to why Al Gore is not in this, and now John Edwards is out. It seems good men like them do much better work outside the system. I just hope his wife is well, and that he was not unduly pressured in any way to end his bid. Perhaps we will see him as AG in the next administraiton if a Democrat wins because it is not guaranteeed. All I know is, I am finished. I too have fallen out of love with politics and today is very sad. I just hope Mr. Edwards continues to fight for the middle class in America and for those who are forgotten. Al Gore has done and is doing tremendous work out here to make progress with climate change, and I think John Edwards can do just as much for poverty. I will try to stay upbeat, but I now have no reason to vote in my primary this coming Tuesday. What a let down.

Jan, go vote, vote for him anyway. Just as a go to hell statement to the powers that be. I have no one to vote for either. I'm considering just voting for John Edwards every time. I hate Clinton, although I do feel sorry for her with her husband lurking in the background looking like a sexual predator. I don't like or trust Obama his health care plan is a joke. I think I'll retreat into a dream world where Al Gore steps up to the plate and runs with John Edwards as his running mate.

I had hopes that with his running for the Presidency, it would be a way to fix this Government, Industry, Commerce and Corporate lobbing mess that America is stack into it.
To this point, now I am debating and speculating with myself to where it would be the best position of power for him to act on this mission that he envisioned for America Today. I guess only he can answer this question, I suppose. -
Jackstowne: We definitely need a pit bull as Attorney General and if Obama did choose Edwards it would certainly unite those of us who see what's happening to our country. That's probably the only way I'd consider Obama, if he were to put Edwards in a position to clean house.
Jan, MM, twodee and 87: We knew the odds were against us all along but once we recover we can't give up - - and yet I'll be damned if I know where to go from here to save our country. At least today anyway. -
Edward's did a wonderful campaign despite the lack of support from the media. Douches!!
But it's so amazing to see the responses for this post. We knew what he could do and he didn't need no mud-slinging to get his point across. I think this country has the power to move forward and hopefully Edward's will be Obama's running mate. This is an exciting time for politics. It's time to clean house, it's time for change and I'm ready for November to come rollin' around! -
i'll miss him...he was my last hope for this election....
guess i'll have to start looking into Canadian citizenship a little more closely... -
No! I think this is horrible news--not just because I'm an Edwards supporter, but because I still have doubts about the electability of Clinton or Obama, particularly with swing voters. And I can't stand to think about another 4 years with the Republican party in control.
-
sgwhites: The only thing that gave me hope thinking past that horrible scenario was the democrates greatly out voted the republicans yesterday in Florida. Although it didn't count for delegates, and knowing that, they still showed up and voted. Otherwise I may be joining jonnat17 in Canada.
-
@Chique:
Damn right, we need a pit bull. The clash against the right is *inevitable.* We need to face our problems head on rather than avoiding them for the false sense of "unity." *No way* will Obama (the likely nominee) choose him.
If somehow Clintons wins it (she now has my vote by default by virtue of solid, *progressive* domestic policies, fighting rhetoric; Obama's pattern of appeasing the right, dividing the left), she better pick Edwards as AG (I can see her doing so).
In the mean time: Bring on Super Tuesday!-

*echoz ears perk up* Canadian citizenship??? ...that's been mulling around in the back of my mind. let us (...errr...me) know what you find jonnat17
=D edwards = pit bull hehe -
Yep, pit bulls to batter that other conservative 50% will really help this country get past the divisive Bush years.
Because you know, a deadlocked congress just creates public demands for a stronger executive to bypass it.
And with a stronger executive... well...-

I've read through all of this and while I don't support either party--nor really feel inspired by any of their candidates--I really dont think Edwards is all that dramatically different from Obama and Hillary in that order.
Again, I'm not a democrat--but its my view that the left's inability to rally behind the better than bad its good is a major difference between the right and the left over the last 20 years... its splitting hairs... ($400 haircut ones) -

Why is everyone assuming it will be a Obama/Edwards ticket? During the past 2 debates Edwards seemed to back Hillary a lot on topics and decisions she made and pointed out a number of flaws of Obama with the way he voted on things and his policies.
Could be very interesting if it was Clinton/Edwards or even Obama/Clinton!?-

From what I watched in the debates Edwards sided with Obama more than not. But I'm a bit biased, Clinton with anyone isn't my cup of tea - but truth be told, anyone is better than McCain or anyone in the republican party for another 4 years. I still think Edwards would make an outstanding Attorney General.
dbeckmann: Rasberrys twice -
I don't think I'll be voting for Clinton or Obama, and if they were to run together on a ticket well that would make it easier not to vote for a Democrat. I voted for Kerry in 2000 because I didn't want a Republican back in office and I got screwed only to later learn that Kerry and Bush were never that different from each other. I'm not going to vote Republican, however I have thought about voting for Ron Paul. I'm almost positive Paul won't get the nod from the Republican Party, that bid looks like it's going to McCain. However I see Paul runnning on a third-party ticket, he has too much support not to. For now, I will decide to remain undecided.

Since I couldn't have Al Gore, John Edwards was my next choose. Now What? I hope he ends up on a ticket with Obama. That wouldn't be too bad, I guess. I'm just very disappointed right now.
-
marilyn: he's on the ballot in NJ, so I may just do that. Of course, to add insult to injury, the letter of support I wrote for him appeared in my local paper today...;-(

I think I'll write him in anyway.
MM - "I am so sad for our country. The corporate media is running the show. This is how Russia used to be. They only allow you to see and know what they want. This iis a very sad day."
I agree and I share your sadness.
It appears that money and power has again prevailed in anointing the winning candidates in our stead.
I'll not give a single dollar to either the Dems or the Repubs until we have more say in our legislative process. Pelosi and Reid have been huge disappointments, especially when it comes to bringing criminals like Bush and Cheney to justice.-

First Kucinich, now Edwards? Hope is fading fast. Obama, will do. (hopefully with Edwards as vice) Anything's better than Hillary, I'd rather have Ron Paul than her.

It's a sad day for progressives, indeed. But it's really a barometer of politics in America, isn't it? Edwards' message of opposing corporate dominance, however appropriate and courageous it is, just didn't get any traction. Here are a couple of great articles along these lines. One is from the American Prospect on Edwards http://www.prospect.org/cs/articles?article=whither_edw... ), the other is from the Nation magazine by Tom Hayden, endorsing Obama http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080211/hayden ).
-
Thank Bill Clinton for this. He is the one that finished off fairness in broadcasting, making media consolidation possible. That is the reason they were able to have the black out of John Edwards. Fat chance I'll vote for his fat wife.

Sad ... and he said he was in it for the long haul :(
-
And then there were two...
What I don't understand though- he said he was in it for the long haul? Why did he drop it so suddenly? Was he lying beforehand?
Maybe he is saving the rest of his funds in case he is on the ticket as a VP. Now I know he stated that he wouldn't run for vice again, but he also said he'd see the race the whole way through didn't he? You never know. I wouldn't be surprised if Edwards popped back in the game somehow. -
a sad day for progressives everywhere....
