A genetically engineered organism that lives 10 times longer than normal has been created by scientists in California. It is the greatest extension of longevity yet achieved by researchers investigating the scientific nature of ageing.
If this work could ever be translated into humans, it would mean that we might one day see people living for 800 years. But is this ever going to be a realistic possibility?

As appealing and as tempting as this sounds, I believe we are meant to die at a natural age. It's a cycle just like everything else in this universe, albeit biological.

I can't imagine very many people find this concept appealing. It seems like the only reason, scientists are attempting this is for their own glory. Why not focus more attention on curing deceases?

Longer lifespan means increased population. We should be focusing on multiplying our resources before we start multiplying humans.

Man just what the earth needs, the process of natural selection to be taken away from humans, the biggest destroyers of environment. People need to accept the fact that everyone dies and actually needs too. There is a reason for aging and dying, this earth cannot possibly continue to sustain life if people live hundreds of years.

i think we arrogantly give too much credit to human beings. our planet has seen bigger and more disastrous spikes in its history. whether we want to believe it or not, this planet will continue to thrive with life with or without us. what we need to stop is our own demise. there's no such thing as overpopulation either (i naively believe), rather it's the unfair distribution of wealth and natural resource (not lack of) that cause poverty and epidemics. if we live long enough, we'd all probably realize that.
