Flooding, cyclones and land erosion are annual occurrences in Bangladesh. From 1974-2003, Bangladesh experienced over 174 natural disasters. 2007 brought the South Asian floods in the summer, the worst flooding in living memory. Cyclone Sidr then shortly followed hitting the southern coast in November.
In a country where agriculture was their primary livelihood, and rural areas used to make up over 96% of the total population, they are witnessing mass migration to urban centres. Through conversations on a recent trip to the cyclone affected areas, I was told that Bangladeshi men are migrating to Dhaka and even abroad (such as Dubai) to seek employment such as rickshaw peddlers, construction laborers.
Therefore women and children are left behind in the rural communities. Industrialization is on the horizon for Bangladesh, and is an opportune time for empowering women to take a place in the workforce without denying their cultural and social traditions.

  • Great work on an important topic, I would like to hear more from the actual people and less voice over--it always adds to a piece to have it told from the native perspective. That being said, I think you did a wonderful job on this piece!

    Thanks for uploading.
