Last week I visited the Marian Koshland Science Museum for œMicrobe Lab, a free day of activities for the general public. In this episode of MicrobeWorld I interview Erika Shugart, deputy director of the Koshland Museum, about œMicrobe Lab and the Crack Koshie™s Curious Case: A Disease Detective Mission activity. Next, I talk with Nagla Fetouh, Education Program Manager for the Koshland Museum, who led a disease exchange activity that teaches people about ways to control the spread of infectious disease by participating in a simulation that shows just how fast illness can spread. Finally, Eric Flem, Communications Manager for Nikon Instruments, Inc., led me through a demonstration of Nikon™s Coolscope. A state of the art microscope used by clinicians and educators that has the ability to broadcast images live on the internet.

  • I like the idea of the show "Microbes World." While I was interested in some of the ideas discussed in the pod, I wish there was more focus on "microbes" and the ideas of the exhibits, rather than focus on the exhibits/exercises themselves.

For instance, Nagla's Fetouh's exercise with the test tubes of liquid is a great idea to communicate disease exchange in person, but didn't really translate too well as a viewing experience. I'm wondering if there's a way to dramatize the concepts rather than just reporting on the exercises.
  • Thanks Patrick. I plan on doing more that get into the mcrobes/specific topics themselves. In fact I've done several in the past that get more specific about issues and microbial processes. My goal on this one was to just focus on the day. There really wasn't any hard science going on and I wanted to keep it short, and kinda fun . Check my profile for other episodes. I do one of these a month usually, sometimes more.
