This is the story of a young couple working towards a fully sustainable lifestyle in Philadelphia. That's no easy thing, especially when you're on a budget.

    This pod reminds me of this book that I read a few months ago--a journalist and her husband spend a year without buying anything but "essentials".

    It was pretty awesome.

  • I'm not sure how "admirable" it is for this couple to live like homeless people, digging through dumpsters, and living out of buckets of water. We're in the 21st century. Com'on, flushing your toilet is not going to destroy the planet. This is definitely extreme.

  • The topic is definitely interesting and highlights the extent to which Do-It-Yourself sustainability can be achieved. While I think it's great to showcase Ryan and Suzanna's lifestyle, it would have been nice to see other people's and/or neighbor's perspective on their lifestyle. Also, the topic of his "illegal" entry to Trader Joe's dumpster should be addressed a bit more since there is legal ramifications for his actions. In all honesty, I think their commitment to DIY sustainability is admirable, but it is not for everyone since the sacrifice is so high. Still, the pod is good in illustrating the feasibility of "going green".

  • Nice work, I watched both versions, good job they didn't cut you down too much. Great couple well spoken, and they are really taking it where it needs to go. Good pod for people to see right now as the word "green" is getting more and more misused, contorted and mangled into some pop BS, the same road "organic" got taken down, and dropped off at wal-mart. Great job, nice first pod.

  • this is not what green lifestyle is about, they have 4 wood-burning stoves and the lights turned on in empty rooms!! i think this pod is about how to survive and maintain a household on a $0 budget.

  • yeah i think the title is misleading as well. fact is though, nice to see people take money they're saving by whatever means and apply it to doing interesting things rather than spend it on more junk. obviously has got its shortcomings but some definite good ideas for those wanting to opt out of some of our consumerist culture.
    let's see more pods on how to make some of these things and all learn a little bit.

  • I think this is a great pod. I like seeing how far people will go to try and reuse and recycle as many resources as possible. The dumpster diving is a little extreme for me and this kind of lifestyle is very time consuming.

  • Reutilizing grey water, even if it's only to water your garden or wash off the driveway, is my favorite sustainable tip. DO IT!

  • This is extremely impressive of the two of you, very admirable. I think people need to remember that even if you don't change your entire lifestyle like they did, by altering little parts of your day and making your life just a little more green, you can truly make a difference!

  • I felt a sense of deprivation watching this pod. I know the couple means well, but I can't imagine following completely in their footsteps even though I wish to help save the planet. Luckily there are a lot of different ways to go green(er) and I think that if all of us reduced our consumption and waste just 25% instead of the close to 100% of that couple, a ton of progress would be made in achieving global sustainability. The extreme lifestyle is very intriguing and makes a good pod, but has a tendency to "extremify" the idea of living sustainably. But it's vital that we make the idea of sustainability and living lightly on the earth, mainstream and introduce it to all our communities and elected officials.

  • I love this pod! I found it ironic that the ad that followed it was for people paying only $1500 for a dining room table and chairs instead of $3500. What? and then there's the ad about paying only $39,000 for kitchen cabinets instead of $69,000. Gotta' love commercials.

  • I absolutely love this pod. I can relate to it because i dumpster dive myself. I still drive and use fresh water though. Dumpster diving is awesome and a great way to reduce waste. Everyone should do it!! Haha and I thought i was the only one in on this great scheme!! Also, it doesnt have anything to do with being homeless. I live in a nice house and have plenty of money in the bank.

    I found it interesting that Suzanna and Ryan's freezer had "some pop BS organic" stuff in it (e.g. MorningStar)... I guess it's alright if you steal it from a dumpster instead of paying for it, though.

    I also really liked the part where Ryan justified burning wood by claiming it would be waste anyway... and then they cut to a huge, fresh pile of split logs ^_^

  • Very interesting. I love seeing people being so resourceful and green at the same time! Don't know if I could live like that, but in many ways I find it kind of romantic...
