Is "co-working" the New Starbucks?

Programmers Rejoice! Co-working is a new kind of workspace popping up in major cities. It's shared office space for freelancers, paid for like a gym membership.

I read this NY Times story a few weeks ago about something similar in San Francisco. Seems like a great idea; I wonder if people are generally open to collaborating or just bouncing implementation ideas off each other in this type of setting. It would be great to have a place to work on your own project or freelance work, but even better if it means having other developers around whose input you can ask for on tricky implementation alternatives. I love collaborating with other smart people, and it would be great to be able to do that even when working on a solo project.

@fountaingoats we (The Werks) were featured in the article you quote and it was early days for us then. To answer you question about collaboration, it really happens organically. We have a whole bunch of people in the space who are permanent desk workers and a couple of dozen regular coworkers who come in. Over time the trust that has built up by familiarity and learning what people do and are has lead to a great amount of collaboration, we have lots of coworkers working on different projects together, some of the more established pass work on to others and people are constantly helping each other.
I think what makes coworking different is the clearly expressed values that help people understand it is all about the collaboration and community.
