The US Fish and Wildlife Service is delaying putting the polar bear on the endangered list in order to get lease rights to oil in Alaska. This sickens me.

  • The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service? I could only guess that it is headed by another oil industry scum-bag like in the executive branch.

  • His name is Dale Hall. I have no idea if he is affiliated with oil industry cronies, but he sure is brainwashed by this administration when it comes to environmental policy.

  • "U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service." Orwell would be proud.

  • It makes me sad. They should think of it as if we were the polar bears.:(

  • we ARE the polar bears.

  • here is there mission statement. What about this does not include polar bears? Got me.

The mission of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) is working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. The FWS is the only agency of the U.S. Government whose primary responsibility is fish, wildlife, and plant conservation. The Service helps protect a healthy environment for people, fish and wildlife, and helps Americans conserve and enjoy the outdoors and our living treasures. The Service's major responsibilities are for migratory birds, endangered species, certain marine mammals, and freshwater and anadromous fish. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is a bureau within the Department of the Interior.

  • they should care more about Alaskan Oil than polar bears. The government is there to help ensure the best life possible for its people, and that includes lower gas prices. If anything the extra tax revenue could actually help the bears by paying for zoos, etc.

  • If they were living up to their mission statement they wouldn't be doing this.
    JanforGore
  • I hate to break it to you aplye321, but your gas prices won't go down by them doing this... they will more than likely be exporting that oil out of the U.S. If you think they care about you more than their profit margins, you are seriously mistaken. The oil they were looking to drill from the Arctic Wildlife Refuge was slated to be exported to Japan. What makes you think they give a damn about you? And if they did they would be getting off of oil period. And I won't even dignify your last sentence with a comment.

  • i think aplye321 is not for real. not much profile there and this is the only comment by the "person"

  • anyone who has interest in the oil industry only have one thing on their minds....more money...where does it end???how much money do these people need. caring nothing about the environment or its habitants..all they want is more money.

  • That's all they EVER care about. Money this and that. That's thier whole point of civilization. Just have us forget ANYTHINGS endangered is thier stupid 'solution'. (easy on me,

  • What can be done? Greenpeace is known for getting in the oil companies' faces.... are they planning any kind of physical block?

there is a serious problem here, it's the disconnect between legislators in Washington and bears in the Arctic. empathy level is low, physical distance (out of sight, out of mind) is great, and greed keeps the oil lobby afloat.

And frankly, greed may always exist in the human psyche. but certain things trump greed.

For example, would you exchange a loved one's life for money? of course not. Certain values trump greed. Love of life trumps love of money.

The proper values must be instilled in the people who make decisions in Washington. They must understand the big picture.

Something about that statement bothers me (other than the hypocrisy based on their actions). Seems we should protect for the benefit of wildlife and their habitats in order to continue the balance nature intended. Our animals are here because they evolved right along with us and they have the same right to live on this earth free without our interference - we shouldn't protect them because it would "continue to benefit" the American people. But hey, maybe I'm being overly sensitive here.

  • not being overly sensitive... there's a great quote I read from Earth in the Balance that i'll try to find to illustrate your point...... standby

  • I agree. that is a great point chique.

  • I cannot find a concise passage to post. But Gore talks about the misconception of the Judeo-Christian traditions that because God granted Man 'dominion' over the Earth, it means that "whenever nature gets in the way of what we want, nature loses."

Gore explains that dominion is not the same as domination. "Dominion," as explained in the scriptures, implies being good stewards of the earth, remembering that as we "till" the earth we must also "keep" it.

  • Thanks twodee and stephenthompson (and, as always, Al Gore!)

  • Good point Chique, and in as much they can then say by these actions that they are in keeping with their hypocritical mission statement. How totally deceptive to the stated purpose of such an agency.

Yes, that chapter in Earth In The Balance is inspirational in discussing our role as stewards of this planet. And recently Mr. Gore was in Georgia at a Baptist meeting and rightfully claimed that heaping contempt on God's creation is inconsistent with glorifying God. And in my view, having "dominion" over the Earth means being caretakers of it, not destroyers of it. But then, these people always skew meanings to suit their own purposes.

  • Nature is the only thing we should worry about. The human species has gotten over with killings and destroying. Money is power and giving power to ignorance is dangerous.
Black and White is old, now is time for the gray in the middle.
No disrespect, just identifying the reality.

  • For animal lovers . . .

    I AM AN ANIMAL RESCUER

My job is to assist God’s creatures

I was born with the drive to fulfill their needs

I take in helpless, unwanted, homeless creatures without planning or selection

I have bought dog food with my last dime

I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand

I have hugged someone vicious and afraid

I have fallen in love a thousand times

And I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body too many times to count

I have animal friends and friends who have animal friends

I don’t often use the word “pet”

I notice those lost at the road side

    And my heart aches

I will hand raise a field mouse

And make friends with a vulture

I know of no creature unworthy of my time

I want to live forever if there aren’t any animals in Heaven

    But I believe there are

Why would God make something so perfect and leave it behind

Some may think we are masters of the animals

But the animals have mastered themselves

    Something people still haven’t learned

War and abuse make me hurt for the world

But a rescue that makes the news gives me hope for mankind

We are a quiet but determined army

And we are making a difference every day

There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan

Nothing more rewarding than saving a life

No higher recognition than watching them thrive

There is no greater joy than seeing a baby play

Who only days ago, was too weak to eat

By the love of those who I’ve been privileged to rescue

    I have been rescued

I know what true unconditional love really is

For I’ve seen it shining in the eyes of so many

    Grateful for so little

    I am an Animal Rescuer

    My work is never done

    My home is never quiet

    My wallet is always empty

But my heart is always full
