5 people were killed, including a SWAT officer and the gunman after a nightlong standoff at a Los Angeles home.

LA police killed the gunman who shot two officers, and barricaded himself in a house after telling police he killed three relatives. Ten hours after the gunman first called the police the house caught fire.

The standoff began at 9 p.m. Wednesday and continued into Thursday morning as the home was surrounded by more than 200 officers.

    • Batterers are the most violent criminals officers have to deal with, by far being the most lethal.

Batterers are a plague on our society: the CDC just released a study showing 1/4 women are held prisoner by batterers at one point in their lives.

    • My heart goes out to the families that are affected by this tragedy.
Is it just me, or is anyone else curious as to why this person did this? I would like to know his backstory. I would like to know what path led him down this road.

Was he mentally ill? What social services failed him on the path to this carnage and tragedy?

Maybe I've been watching too much of "The Wire" but every criminal has a story. If our media provided us more about the history of these events and people, maybe we as a society would be more motivated to see action taken to prevent the conditions for tragedy from forming. And I don't mean just hiring more police officers.
