  • I grew up in Queens, NY during the 60's and 70's. We lived in Jackson Heights on 90th street in what was called the "open stairs" apartment buildings. I am a white female. When the white families moved out to Long Island to escape the new families, the apartments opened up and many nuyoricans moved in. I learned a new culture and loved every minute. I sponged up the music, love, and food. The people were open, loving, and shared their lives with me. I so miss that time. It formed my young mind to immigration issues which was learning about the opinions of others and to respect different cultures, different colors. I thank all my past neighbors for letting this white blued eyed irish child into their homes to experience acceptance rather than then hate and righteousness of others. The families who moved lost. Thank you Nuyorican's for all that you gave to me.
