Lakota Indian Nation secede from the United States by declaring themselves as a sovereign nation on December 20, 2007, and may pose as our own "Gaza/West Bank" issue with threats of liens against property ownership within the declared territories of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana.
Although it may be argued that those said properties are illegal in the first place, those homesteaders may have to give up their own generational settlements. If we, as Americans, support their declaration and aid in a peaceful process of helping transition their newly declared sovereignty, we can set an example as to how we participate in foreign relations by first fixing our own mistakes here at home.
Furthermore, it will be interesting to follow their own policies with Relations, Environment, and Trade. This is truly exciting and deserve further thought and discussion amongst all Americans and international communities in solidarity alike.

I am with the Lakota all the way. They are setting an example of freedom; true freedom to be an independent Nation.
We all know the United States of America is not living up to it's obligations to its people under it's own constitution, let alone the treaties it has with other nations. This is because the United States has been hijacked by political terrorists. These are the political terrorists who are controlling Washington who use fear to control the masses of sheep here in the United States. The Mass Media which is owned by the same corporations that own the Military Industrial Complex are complicity with the intentional distortion of the news; manufacturing consent for the Imperialism that is emerging. Soon the Constitution will have been completely undermined.
I have native American blood from both of my parents, one North America (Blackfoot) and the other South American (Quetchua) besides having several European mixtures as well. I am such a mixture of bloodlines. My claim to the United States is that I am a citizen by virtue of birth. I love what the essence of the Constitution and Democracy represents, but I cannot accept what it has become and is becoming.
Therefore I applaud the efforts of the Lakota to stand for freedom from the political terrorists in the United States. -

1865 settled the question of haveing a seperat country within the national territory of the U.S. the lakota have been deafeted in battle for the right to claim the area in question.
-
Toughth is talking about the Reconstruction period starting 1865 which applied to the South after the civil war.
(all) treatises set by the US with the Lakota before all that, were breeched, nullifying and voiding any of its validity, the argument of the Lakota. establishing a country within the national territory is addressed to those who are part of the United States. but Lakota land is not Federal land and homesteaders there are there illegally even in US laws. (correct me if i'm wrong).
definitely, this will be an interesting thing to follow.-

History > The transformation of American society, 1865â1900 > National expansion > The West > Indian policy
This article goes into depth about the situation with Indian Lands and may offer some insight into the 1865 question. -
after researching deeper into this, it became apparent that it's not a popular movement amongst the Lakota Sioux. in fact, the delegation that went to the US Congress were neither appointed or held any sort of leadership roles within the Lakota Sioux nation(s). Russell Means and Duane Martin, although regarded highly by the American Indian Movement, does not represent the Lakota nor did they confer with the elders prior to declaring sovereignty to the US.
They are seen with great suspicion and the declaration is being dismissed by Lakota leaders as a publicity stunt. Meanwhile, the US Congress is not taking the declaration seriously. The Lakota Freedom Delegation can not denounce the treatises because it was not made with them. They were made with the Lakota People, whose elders were not present nor gave permission.
Still, the poverty and mortality issues in the reservations are very real and can use some effective help from U.S. citizens and sympathizers like us.
Toughth, looking into it, i found that the Lakota Sioux actually won against the U.S. (see Custer) and a treaty was signed allowing them to have dominion over hunting grounds, although gold rushers just outright ignored it.

I believe the Navajo Nation and other tribes have done this as well. The Acoma tribe here doesn't have tax. In fact, with casino funds, they are expanding the reservation by buying up land. It's pretty interesting to see what's going on with these independent nations in our borders.

i will do what i can to turn more attention to the plight of peace, freedom, and well-being for First Nations and all our relations.

The history and present day reality of the people of Indian Nations in North America is complex and varies from tribal nation across this continent.
Thanks for posting this and showing concern.
There are many misconceptions about Indian people among non-Indians in general and some are expressed in this discussion.
The Lakotah are one of the largest tribes, but there is, and never has been a central government that speaks for all the Lakotah bands of the Seven Council Fires. That is one reason the U.S. government was able to steal so much land - by negotiating with people who did not have the right to sell Lakotah land.
Russell Means, and his wife, Pearl Daniels Means are close friends to me and my family. I'll ask Russ and Pearl what they would like people at current to understand about the Republic of Lakotah and the abrogation of the treaties that took place on December 17, 2007 when the delegation went to Washington, D.C.
I will post some links to sites that begin to explain this complex issue that is at the core of America's real "original sin".

As a California Secessionist I support the Lakota 100%.
I do not believe it is in the best interests of the American States to for them to be united, and that the nation is already politically divided enough that some areas would be stronger if they were independent.
