....Crazy, right? Well, believe it or not, there are people like this out there. In my middle school, the sixth grade teacher actually believes 100% that gays caused 9/11. He's also one of those guys who hangs around the street corners of San Fransisco yelling that it's the end of the world, ( i.e. he's a manic street preacher). The point is, people actually believe this crap.
As a Christian, I just want to say, that these people are crazy. We all don't think that way, I promise. I'm a Christian feminist and a democrat, and I support homosexuals. We all aren't intolerant jerks. Call me crazy....

What do you think of the bible verses that this comic cited? Don't those count for anything? I completely agree with you, but there certainly are a lot of passages like this that endorse intolerance. If you accept the bible, don't you need to accept those?
(note: this IS a question, not an accusation.) -
lol then i'm glad you are not a good christian.. :) you are a good person

dco,
need implies that as a human you have no choice in what you believe. so...no, you do not need to accept anything the bible preaches, it's not the word of god, it's the word of a bunch of guys.
imagine you took a random sampling of your friends and acquaintances and told them to write a collection of their thoughts and beliefs and then anointed that text the ruler of all texts.
would i go to hell if i chose to laugh at your interpretation of a bunch of guys i don't know and their thoughts about things i've never experienced?
(and by the way, of the sampling of friends you chose...i would guess 15-25% would be gay)
the idea that the bible is the end-all explanation for a majority of our population is baffling, and the act of citing it as "proof" or "fact" of human experience is insanity.-

Hi DCO,
For those of us who are non-christians how are we supposed to absorb the biblical quotes from the referenced comic when hate speech such as, 'Their stink reached heaven and God was fed up with them' is used in reference to homosexuals? -
0o0o I believe it, and it's injustice I say !!! well I never liked the law to well, neither did I religion at that, but yea stay positive.

To dco:
Excellent question.
I know to some people, this may not make a true Christian, but oh well; I don't agree with everything the Bible says. In fact, there are some parts of the Bible I try to avoid, because they make me so angry. I still believe in God though, just not 100% of everything in his Word.
This is something that I've been struggling with for a very long time.-

bloodsugarmagic - thanks for the friendly response. I guess what I don't understand is why any of it counts if some is rejected on the basis that you disagree with it. Ultimately, the bible is meant to be a set way of life; true followers were meant to submit and obey. It tries to give divine morality, and proposes that all morality is divine. If you disagree morally, then you do so with your own preconcieved morals, and if you have non-divine morals, how can you view the bible as a holy book? I have never understood how some can put their own opinion over the bible, yet still call any of it the word of god. Again, non-hostile intent. Consider me a neutral party with no bias either way. I'm not trying to convince you of anything, or argue, just question. Thanks.

Cosmoplavix (post 1) - my point exactly. Biblical ethics are outdated, and would have been for a long time, had they not reigned supreme of rationality. We should not adhere to the bible at all, for, though it possesses a few nuggets of true wisdom, this is riddled with tons of outdated nonsense, which causes the ideology that we see in the above comic. If it is truly holy text, the divine influence would have the foresight to make it applicable for any era. It, by my relatively objective interpretation, is homophobic, chauvenistic, sexist, racist, prejudice, bigotted, ignorant, homocidal, genocidal, hypocritical, misleading, and above all primitive. The countless parables in the bible (david w/foreskins, sodom & gemorrah) endorse many very immoral things, and I think this discredits the whole work.
Cosmoplavix (post 2) - You say god would vomit if he saw how we use his name. He is supposed to be omniscient, omnipotent, etc. He HAS seen it. If he dislike the situation in any way, he could change it with the mere thought. In fact, the idea that he hasn't contradicts the whole concept of a benevolent god. Other than that, I agree with your analogy, and wish we would take action to keep America from becoming the next Nazi Germany. -
blueplanet - I was using the word need within a context that modified it to refer to the doctrine that is endorsed by the bible. Your likening of a group of guys to the bible writers is astonishing... my friends are far more credible. I'm not sure how you intended your post to be interpreted, but it seems in agreement with me, so thanks.

Filmpunk - because, though used in a hateful manner, citations WERE from the bible, and even without predisposition, they imply hatred. I'm not claiming to be a bible expert, or anyone who knows what he's talking about more than the next guy, but I can say that I'm pretty clear-minded. I'd say we (non-christians) should interpret it the way it sounds.
-
Cosmoplavix (again) - Nice story. I'm not sure what its purpose is, but nice nonetheless. Nothing should keep you from sharing your opinion; not even bigotry.

The Bible also says that you can't touch a girl on her period and that she's unclean. Actually read about all of Liviticus, it has the most outrageous rules in the world. Does anyone follow that?
Jesus never even taught about homosexuals, just his apostles, who also said a lot of other bullshit.
The Bible also says God is love, which would make it impossible for him to HATE gays. This comic is by no means biblical or edifying.-

The bigotry of Christianity (Well most religions) is awful. This cartoon is teaching kids to judge others in a bad way, who are most likely very good people, just because they are gay! The bible is a scourge that until it and other religious beliefs are seen as the myths that they are we will not be free from this bigotry. It's unfortunate that we haven't gotten past all this at this point in time. Why can't people think for themselves. Don't be afraid There's no Hell and no heaven just a pile of dirt! This is not to say that we shouldn't treat people as we would like to be treated so be kind to people. I'm an Athiest and I don't need a book or a god to tell me that the right way to live is to be forgiving and thoughtful and to love everyone.

To dco:
I have to apologize. You seemed to have been bombarded by many comments and responses over your first question. I'm sorry if this inconvenienced you at all. However, I loved reading your replies, thoughts, and views. The same goes for everybody else.
Thanks everybody.-
