The "No Mas FARC" demonstration started on Facebook. The movement spread across Colombia and around the world.

It is the single largest demonstration of any kind in recent Colombian history.

  • So inspirational to see people taking a stand, despite there being the potential for repercussions. Also shows how incredibly powerful, and useful, the web can be as an organizational tool for movements. It's a new day!

  • The solidarity seen in this demonstration is so inspiring! They have suffered so long.
Good work getting the word out! I hope if enough people hear about this and fight it, it will bring change.

  • This is an important short film because U.S. audiences are rarely given an on-the-ground perspective on what Colombians are actively doing and thinking to stop the violence. Seeing a pacifist peace march against FARC, a leftist guerrilla group, shows how complex of an issue political violence is in Colombia.

  • LOOK!!!! this is bullshit!!!!!! it sucks that so many people is kidnapped, the problem is not just FARC, the government has done SO MUCH MORE DAMAGE!!!!

IT SHOULDNT BE NO MORE FARC, IT SHOULD BE NO MORE WAR!!!! everytime the colombian military kills innocent people, the Government, THE PRESIDENT URIBE VELEZ JUSTIFIES IT!!!!!

I am colombian, I am from that same city Barranquilla, most of people that are kidnapped are WEALTHY, THATS WHY THEY GET THE ATTENTION, what about the farmers? what about the children? what about the tortures, please if someone is reading this and you want more information I am more than willing to share it with you. I live in Canada and many Colombians call me a guerrilera(guerrilla girl) or terrorist coz I DO NOT SUPPORT URIBE VELEZ GOVERNMENT, he won the ellections by torturing people!!! there are records, there are witnesses, but if they speak they get killed, the ones that have spoken ARE DEAD!!!!!,

It is good that people come together, but its bad that they only march for this cause, there are many reasons why all colombians and our planet should march for, the world terrorist is SO TRENDY RIGHT NOW!!! HOLY SHIT!!! AND WHO MADE IT POPULAR? ????
------B U S H------- the colombian government supports the u.s administartion 110%, he wants to privatize many schools so a lot of people do not have the opportunity to study, man..its just so much evil....

Issues always have many sides, this one in particular indeed has lots of them, I stand on the side of the innocent people, not just the kidnapped ones, but the ones that are starving because they are black, the ones that have no school because they are indian, the ones that have no legs because they did not went to bed at the time the paramilitary sent them to bed.

The Paramilitary in Colombia has special privileges, but they are supported by the government so the government always find the way to justify their actions of hate and torture towards the innocent.

THE PROBLEM IN COLOMBIA IS NOT JUST FARC!!!

IT SHOULD NOT BE NO MORE FARC

IT SHOULD BE NO MORE WAR!!!!!!

  • lido,
I agree with a lot of what you say. Many people in the march commented that they were marching not just against FARC, but against the WAR. Of course, there were the groups in Bogota who had splintered off from the main demonstration to chant just that - that it was not No Mas FARC, but No Mas Guerra.

This piece was about the march and the people involved who organized it (Oscar Morales, Carlos Torres, etc.) at the grass roots level. At the end of the piece it was noted that many didn't attend the demonstrations because they believed the Uribe government was manipulating this to their own right-wing ends, completely ignoring the atrocities of the paramilitary.

I understand that the issue is much more complex than the organizers of the No Mas FARC demonstration would like people to believe. There are many in Colombia with dissenting views, but because the nation is in a state of war, many possible sources of ours felt uncomfortable speaking of their views on camera. I, of course, respect their wishes.

That piece is for another time - a much longer piece and at a later date. But thank you for responding and informing viewers, especially non-Colombians about the complexity of this issue.

    Cheers, and all the best!

  • Amazing that the internet, facebook helped connect so many people in a common cause
Never saw any coverage of this demonstration (or much about Columbia that didn't involve cocaine coming to the US) on mainstream media
    kudos to those who demonstrated!
