Defense Secretary Robert Gates is endorsing a "pause" in troop reductions in Iraq after 30,000 U.S. soldiers are sent home this summer. Gates has previously expressed hope to pull-out an additional 100,000 troops by the end of the year. But after meeting with American commanders in Baghdad, the defense secretary told reporters he wants a "period of evaluation" to asses the impact on Iraq security. These comments are yet another indication that American troop levels will likely stay the same in 2008.

So who is the Rumsfeld replacement? The New York Times Magazine has a great article about Gates on Baghdad, Bush, and bureaucracies.
