According to science reporters from the BBC, a pioneering new treatment for diabetes is being put into place across the UK, with some experts believing that it may eventually lead to a cure for the disease.Six centres nationwide are receiving nearly £10m of government funding to offer transplants of insulin-producing cells. The 'new' technique has been used on only a select few of diabetes patients, with it believed to reduce the risks of coma-inducing blood sugar attacks in people with type 1 diabetes.
The BBC explains the procedure nice and simply for any non-biology graduates, in which 'islet cells' are obtained from a dead donor's pancreas and then injected into a patient's liver where they get to work producing insulin.
