Conyers Considers Cheney Impeachment Hearings
On Thursday, Chairman John Conyers' House Judiciary Committee held a hearing at which Attorney General Michael Mukasey said that he would not investigate torture or warrantless spying, he would not enforce contempt citations, and he would treat Justice Department opinions as providing immunity for crimes.
None of this was new, but perhaps it touched something in Conyers that had not been touched before. Following the hearing, he and two staffers met for over an hour with two members of Code Pink and discussed activism and impeachment, including Congressman Robert Wexler's proposal to begin impeachment hearings on Cheney.
Conyers expressed his concerns about what might happen following an impeachment, the danger of installing a Bush replacement or losing an election. But he said he's listening to several advocates for impeachment, including Liz Holtzman and David Swanson of Democrats.com. He hinted he could be swayed by a convincing argument, leaning out of his chair for dramatic effect.
So let's help Chairman John Conyers decide! We know Conyers agrees with all of us on the legal grounds for impeachment because he made this case himself in his 2006 book, "The Constitution in Crisis." Where Conyers needs persuasion is on the politics of impeachment, so we have addressed his concerns here:

We'd like you to email Conyers (and other Judiciary Committee Democrats) with the link above, but please don't stop there.
1. Call his office at 202-225-5126 and say you would like him to begin Cheney impeachment hearings immediately. Tell him the hearings must be on impeachment because that's the only way to force the White House to comply with Congressional subpoenas. The phone in his office was reportedly ringing once every second, 60 times per minute, all day long on Monday. Let's ring it faster on Tuesday.
2. Print our petition
http://www.democrats.com/node/15663/print
and fax it to Conyers at 202-225-0072 with your name and address at the end.
3. Urge your Representative and Senators to sign onto Congressman Robert Wexler's letter to Conyers (which he plans to deliver on Friday) here:
http://democrats.com/peoplesemailnetwork/125
We know we're asking a lot, but we're not alone - our friends from Code Pink are fasting for impeachment and meeting with Conyers on Tuesday to discuss opening Cheney impeachment hearings.

I made the call and told them that the only reason THEIR Congressional rating was LOWER than Bush's was because they had been mired in the mud trying to pass legislation that Bush would veto and that he had the "bully pulpit" to "propagandize" his reasons for a veto and make them seem as though the Dems were "breaking the bank".
I told them that impeachment hearing and congressional testimony were the only way they were going to get MORE traction than Bush.
Start a spectacle that shows just how much Bush and Cheney have broken the law, taken our rights, destroyed the constitution, lied to the people, faked evidence, started an immoral and illegal war and so on.-

PREACH ON!

I also sent Conyers an email and reminded him I gave to his "After Downing Street" fund and that I felt that he had let me and others down by dropping that promise to impeach Bush now that Bush is almost out of office.
Listen, people, Conyers is starry-eyed because he is flying all over the place to be with Barack Obama at various functions. (Read his own blog entry about being too busy to write much because he was leaving to fly off somewhere to meet Obama.) Doesn't he still work for you Michigan residents?
I think Barack is doing just fine without Conyers and we need Conyers to open up the impeachment hearings. I'm sorry to label Conyers as a could-be racist but we need him OTHER places! Now, he seems to be gleefully tripping around the country basking in the glow of Obama's recent successes!
Tell Conyers that Obama can and probably will get elected without Conyers' help and there is still a tough job to do to save the Constitution and the country and that impeachment hearings are the only way to expose the Bush criminality.
Even with Wexler's tersely-worded questions, Condi Rice was quite defiant in re-framing them so that she could appear as though she hid no contrary intelligence before the Iraq War. Sure, Condi.
Bush's reach into the oil industry to get Cheney, Rice and others was evidently a stroke of genius. They were already well-trained at lying and putting make-up on a pig.
I don't remember whether she was an exec with Chevron or Citgo or Unocal but she is just as slippery as the Exxon-Valdez oil spill and all of Bush's Enron friends. Watch the Wexler/Rice exchange here and know that the road ahead will be a rough one:

However, THAT is only if we can force people to have to testify under oath in a nationally-televised impeachment hearing where a few slips of smaller tongues will snare the "Big Boys".-
