Do we really need "schooling"?

Does public schooling really teach us to think for ourselves or rely on the meaningless tasks we are forced to perform every single day? According to John Taylor Gatto, the public schooling system is designed to teach us how to be obediant, how to conform, and how to stop thinking for ourselves. Why would anyone want to be forced into a life that typical? Well, maybe if we can change the way our youth is "educated" we can finally move forward as a country and figure out our own problems instead of relying on others to fix them.
