Spielberg resigned his position as creative director for the opening and closing ceremonies in Beijing because of China's involvement in Darfur. Sudan sells 2/3 of it's oil to China in return for weapons that are being used in the genocide.
China has not released a statement about Spielberg's boycott. They were trying to prevent any political statements surrounding the Olympics. They have been arresting hundreds of their own citizens ahead of the Olympics to prevent any disturbances. Fortunately Spielberg is outside their jurisdiction.
