Everybody says that Valentine's Day is just a day to sell stuff, and this time everybody's actually right. I hate Valentine's Day because it's over-commercialized, overpriced, overhyped, and basically a day for binge eating. But I'm not the only one grumpy. I polled dozens of young people, and they all had good reasons to be hatin' on V-Day. I even met a group of musicians on Hollywood Blvd in LA who composed a spontaneous anti-Valentine's day anthem just for my rant.
What do you think?

It's interesting, honest and right on. Don't get sucked in to a manufactured, consumption-based "occasion."
Nicely done. -
That was really fun to watch. Oh Valentine's Day, how forced you are. I like "Guilt or Low Self Esteem Day," it has a nice ring to it and pretty much sums it up.
See I am an interesting case. I am half french, so I am a romantic, but I am also a college student who likes keeping the money I have for important things...like food and DVDs. However, I do have a girlfriend and was one of many others shopping today.
If any one else wants to start a support group based on all the money they are going to spend on dinner tomorrow, let me know.-

It's only a bad day if you are over analytical about it. If you just relax and have fun, then it's a great excuse to eat lots of cheap candy.
-
Awesome piece Julie! Way to channel that anti-V day rage!

This is much better. I'm glad you edited out that weird beer bottle you had in the beginning. It looked like you were drinking because you were depressed. Now it's more positive since you just have a box of chocolates, and you narrowed down the introduction dialogue which just gets right to the point. Good job!

So do something worthwhile -- and FREE -- on Feb 14th.

I'm not exactly crazy about this holiday either. Does anyone even really know the TRUE meaning of this holiday? There's not even a point in pretending there's some deep meaning in Valentines day anymore.

I think it had something to do with St. Valentine being executed, but I don't know.
I think the name should be changes to "Single awareness day."-

loved it! i have a sweetie, and i still hate how superficial and fake the whole valentine's day thing is. good piece, i liked all the different views that just built on each other, and all the movement.
-
Excellent! You got some amazing interviews there and totally lucked out with the great band. You should keep in touch with them for future projects. Ready made scoring!
People have to realize who is making this holiday so damned nuts and filled with unrealistic expectations. No, not Hallmark or Leeds, but YOU! People buy into the hype and forget about the love. Really, how about burgers over candlelight and just the joy of being together? Why is love supposed to cost so much money? Are people that materialistic that they'd rather have a diamond than a kiss that says "I love you more than anything"? Yes, they are.
Again, very well made piece. It was really refreshing to see that not everyone falls victim all the pressure. -
haha. awesome. my favorite part was the "dressing up like a prostitute so that you'll receive love" part. so true. valentine's day sucks. just another scheme to spend our money on shit we don't need and to force gestures of love upon people.
just watched "the story of stuff" on how consumerism is the #1 priority of the gov't. -
I was lucky enough to get 24 Season 2 as a nice surprise gift for Valentine's Day. It's completely fickle and materialistic but as a result, I now love the day.
-
Fantastic work, Julie! If you're really in love, everyday it's a holiday. You don't need a valentine to know wich way the love blows...

hey!
in italy there's no such a big thrill fo valentine's day....it's a lame day though.
Good Job Julie!
Keep on defending singles' rights!
greetings from italy -
Well hey, if you are single and want to show your love, you can always plant a tree today to show your love for Mother Earth.;-). But I agree with the premise of this. My husband and I love each other everyday. I don't need Hallmark to tell me to. Unfortunately, this day like all holidays has been co-opted by greed. But it can still be a special day if you have a special someone in your life and want to show a little bit more love on your own. I don't see anything wrong with that. Fun video.

Hey Julie--nice work! Loved the group of singers...really added to the piece
-
Just say no! :-) I heart this piece.

Why hate a day?
-
I definitly agree with the majority of everyone's opinions so far. There are the selected few who appreciate Valentine's Day. These are probably the same people who have enough money to buy extravegant gifts every year for their significant other. But for me Valentine's Day is just a day that shows the world I'm single. And when the rare occasion happens that I'm not single, I spend so much time worrying about what to get the guy. It's just stressful and pointless. However, I do enjoy making cupcakes on Valentine's Day for myself =)

Liked the interviews. Especially the one with the ex-flower-delivery dude. However, didn't like the singers..... Or felt that you used them too much.
The first shot of them was good. But then, it got to be too much.... And actually, I think, was detrimental to your piece. Mainly for the following (not too nice) reason: they looked liked those people from high school who never got asked to go to the prom, and so railed against it with a passion. That is the vibe I got from them, especially at the end. Which is not, I think, what you were trying to portray. -
Wahh, I need to buy stuff, wahh my girlfriend wants to wear sexy underwear for me.....what a douche.

I like Valentine's Day. Despite the fact that I'm not in a relationship. It seems that most people are just griping about the cost associated with the expression of love. I don't think everyone is downplaying the potential of this day. If you don't want to spend money. Do what I did. Steal the supplies you need to make your own Valentines from the same giant corporations capitalizing on your feelings. I find people appreciate well thought out and prepared hand made gifts anyway.
-
As someone who fits in the "have no one to celebrate Feb. 14 with" category, I definitely approve this pod.
-
A well done video, but it only expresses the emotional bagagge that people try to project onto Valentine's Day.
The idea is to express the best of what a relationship is without piling on all the negative images that distort the principles that Valentine's Day is celebrated to represent. -
wow, i really enjoyed this video. i just see valentine's day as just another working day.

I agree with all points (except the "it's in favor of the females" guy... don't get me started!). But at the same time, I can't say a single bad thing about a special day that reminds us to love the people around us who we might take for granted.
So what if it's "just another scheme to spend our money on shit we don't need". EVERYDAY there's someone with another scheme to get us to spend our money on shit we don't need. That doesn't mean you do it. Sheesh!
I've been single on V-day and never felt bummed about it, I've had single friends who I love and that day reminded me to tell them!
I think this video was good, but I actually agree with a few of the other comments that it is extremely slanted without even ONE counterpoint and that turns me off of it. A lot.
It might have done good to offer some solutions at the end, as a wrap-up to the video. But as you said, it is a "rant". -
I love it !! Free thinking rocks !!! V.day is obligation day for those of us with relationships and a reminded of love we don't' have for those who are single... It's an emotional roller coaster for us all !!
-
Awesome. Very well done. Everybody who thinks about it for a bit realizes that they hate V-day, and this video sums that up in a very well shot, well edited package.
Rock on.-
