Billions face climate change risk

Billions of people face shortages of food and water and increased risk of flooding, experts at a major climate change conference have warned.

The bleak conclusion came ahead of the publication of a key report by hundreds of international environmental experts.

Agreement on the final wording of the report was reached after a marathon debate through the night in Brussels.

People living in poverty would be worst affected by the effects of climate change, the gathered experts said.

"It's the poorest of the poor in the world, and this includes poor people even in prosperous societies, who are going to be the worst hit," said Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Mr Pachauri said those people were also the least equipped to deal with the effects of such changes.

  • Well Cosmo, beggars can't be choosers. We have to face the fact that if not enough is done, we could experience truly tragic, and irreversible, consequences.

  • We all need to continue to do our parts no matter how small or large. Sometimes the smallest efforts have a way of snowballing into a bigger effort once other people get on board.

We need to keep bringing awareness to this issue, outside of this forum to all the people we come in contact with.

  • I agree, all!

May Lush Rimbaugh hire three maids in his search for something to numb the pain. While there is a slight chance he actually believes his own lies, I have to think he must feel as rotten as he looks for lying to Americans for so many years.

May the first rotten fish lodge in his own throat. With a carcass as big as his, there would be precious few who could even attempt the Heimlich maneuver.

Only a fantasy even though his misinformation is truly life-threatening.

  • most of the world has accepted the facts of global warming, reasons aside, and have begun to take real steps towards preparation and prevention if possible. we would be well advised in this country to start taking steps towards real, honest progress in these areas if we are to survive much less thrive in the coming years. more than making profit or controlling global economies is at stake.

  • Familylove, that's a great point. Apathy is America's curse. For example, I recently saw a post about what "we" could do, without bush's permission. While the topic was a very good one - veganism for ecological value - we need to stop thinking of ourselves of children. We are in control of this country, and we have to decide that a solution is in order. We bitch and moan, and fail to execute. I see this as being a central error across the board with American politics, and with the democratic party in particular. (sorry, but it's true!) We need great leaders to rouse the population. Radical, but peaceful leaders, suck as MLK. We need to take to the streets in business suits, carrying golf clubs and LV luggage. WE are not just a hippie minority, but an entire nation...which is how we need to represent ourselves. But protest isn't enough. Democrats should be fighting for a CRUSHING victory in this arena. WHAT HAVE WE ACCOMPLISHED? Nothing amazing... We are failing every day. Our elected representatives are failing us everyday. Even our activists are failing us, when they (we) fight only to make a scene rather than fighting for actual progress. Let's JUST DO IT! Write a bill. Apply pressure. What's the damned problem????

  • i think the hardest part angelina is that we are living in the disinformation age. so we have apathy,dis-information,and ton's and ton's of sparkle flash and misdirection.
and it is very hard for many to look outside of the box they have been raised in.
but faith and perseverance are all we have. freedom democracy republic. these are the things that keep me going. if we allow our politicians to fail us, without consequence's, we will lose these things.
i think you are right about writing a bill hmmm. i guess i know my next topic of research.
