The plans were never really gaining any popular support and it now looks like Sepp Blatter has put the final nail in the coffin for plans to play Premier League games abroad.
"This will never happen, at least as long as I am president of FIFA. It is an astonishing concept that is not acceptable to me and will not be acceptable to the FIFA executive or Congress. I thought it was a joke at the end of the carnival season but it seems not.”
Richard Scudmore, the head of the Premier League, must be somewhat miffed at how much Sepp has Blattered all over his plans for a sunnier competition. To add insult to injury Sepp Blatter said that this plan amounted to abuse, an already rich Premier League trying to get richer and said this greed would have a negative effect on Englands 2018 bid to host the World Cup.
“When it comes to a decision of the executive committee concerning this matter of the 39th round, and I am sure they will be against it, then it will not have a positive impact on the bid from England”
Just to make it clear Mr Scudmore, it looks like you've now got no support at all, and now you've damaged our 2018 World Cup bid. Nice one.
