According to former Marine Colonel Werner, with our military stretched so thin and expanding into other areas we will not be able to avoid a draft. Politicians may not be talking about this, but I believe it will come to pass in the next four years if we continue on the path we are on. That is why I am leary of Clinton, Obama, and McCain (though moreso about McCain) because even though Clinton and Obama have stated they want to drawdown troops from Iraq they have not pledged that we will not get involved elsewhere in the Middle East. Matter of fact, on Obama's website it explicity states what a "great friend" he is to Israel and he defends their right to defend themselves "as they see fit." Does that mean nuclear? He even voted for Bush's Syria Accountabiility Act, and Bush is now ramping that up. Now, does that mean expanding this war to Iran or Syria? This is also why I get frustrated watching people get all googly eyed at Obama speeches and not asking the hard questions of either of them. I already know what we would get with McCain and that is why I would never vote for him. However, with Clinton and Obama all we get are vague answers and no discussion on this issue and I would rather have the truth than vague roundabout answers. With my own son turning 18 within the next couple years, I will be damned if I will hand him over to anyone to fight an illegal war for corporate America or for any other country just because the "president" sending him is bound to a lobby and "is a great friend of Israel" or that other country.

Get people to vote for a democrat... that's our best chance of avoiding a draft. McCain would probably try a draft... hopefully Congress will be in a position to stop him if he's elected (heaven forbid).

Actually, it was a Democrat who introduced a bill regarding reinstating the draft a couple of years ago. Now while the chance of it may be less with a Democrat, It isn't less enough for my liking at this point. I need a pledge from Clinton and Obama that they would not sign such a bill. Think we'll get that?

"But in order to bolster flagging recruitment, the military is basically lowering its standards, he said, allowing for criminals and others who should not be part of the military to enlist."

I want to know why we think its unacceptable to allow criminals into the military. Instead we create criminals out of people who have normal lives here. When they come back from "the shit" they murder their wives, abuse their families and commit other violent crimes.

a comment to cheyrose, I am insulted for myself and my friends and my wife who are all in the military. The crime rate is lower in the military then any city in this country. We havnt lowered the standards when it comes to criminals as you call them. each individual is looked at in a case by case basis. the military does not let in multiple felons, domestic battery cases, rapists, murderers, child molesters, drug pushers, drug addicts, and such. If people like this get in its because they lied. i was in the shit as you call it. I needed a waiver to get in the Army for misdemeanor type crimes that I committed. it wasnt easy. It took me 6 months to get approved. If you have more then 2 pot offenses you are disqualified. More then 5 misdemeanors your done. forget it. You have no idea how hard it is to get in. Its easier to get into college. By the way, females are soldiers too. Im sorry that I am a big fat criminal who murders people. Soldier or no soldier people commit crimes no matter what the profession. Religious figures molest kids, doctors rape, police are racist, there are bad people in every class. If a soldier murdered their spouse they would have done it regardless. The problem with this country is that people have stopped taking responsibility for their own actions. They accuse everyone else. Thats crap.

You've got to be kidding me. I bet you never even bothered to look up the statistics and find out that the military has exceeded its recruiting goal every year since 1999. And why do you people think that Democrats are a peace loving anti war party. The only reason they are against the war in Iraq is because it was started by bush. Have you forgotten the reign of JFK and LBJ who kept the Vietnam war going for all of those years and it was Nixon who got us out.
